Re: Happy Mother's Day
I sent my sister a text. "Happy Mother's Day to one of
the best mothers I know."
She has raised 2 remarkable daughters.
That's lovely of course, but from this side of the Pond it seems
absolutely bizarre to send Mothers' Day greetings to anybody
else's mother. Over here what happens on Mothering Sunday (the
fourth Sunday in Lent) is that people say /do / give nice
affectionate things to their own mothers, full stop. We don't
say 'Happy Mother's Day' to anyone else, nor are there any
non-family events. Did it use to be like that in the USA too,
and has it just morphed (presumably with the
gift-and-greetings-card industries pushing it?

When I was a little girl growing up in Virginia, on Mother's Day
we would do something to honor our own Mother - not other
people's mothers. Make a special meal of things she liked. A
small gift, usually homemade. Also the tradition was that when
attending church on that day people would wear a white rose if
their mother was deceased and a red one if she was living. I
don't know the origin of the rose tradition.

This is actually sort of how I feel.
I mean, I have come to eventually say "happy mother's day" to my
sister, and this year to my aunt who is my godmother, especially
since my own mom is gone.
I'm at the point where I don't want a gift, and I never really
did. I also did not want to go to any <insert swear word or
negative intensifier here> restaurant.
What I always said I wanted was all the good parts of being a
mother.
No homework, no arguing, no backtalk, no chores, no whining.
Just spending time together doing something fun.
I was a working mom, and I didn't get enough time with my kids.
I didn't want to give them up; I wanted them closer. But without
the bad parts.
I also wasn't really burdened with so awful much housework; my
husband generally carried more of that weight (he was
freelance). So I didn't want to be pampered, and I didn't need a
break--at least, not a break from things at home.
One year I took them to the park and taught them how to throw a
softball, and how to bat. Another year we went to the beach.
This year, I didn't get any gifts, actually--but my kids were at
the dinner table, and we played a game in the evening.
Time with my kids--that's the best.
katiekat, I wish I could talk to your daughter and tell her to
NOT talk about what she CAN'T do. And instead focus on what she
can; she can spend a half-hour talking via Zoom; she can mail
you a greeting card (or write a short letter--which is even
cheaper!). It's really hurtful, what she said, because it was
essentially: I know I should do this, but I'm not going to.
My son mailed me a Mother's Day car with a funny cat and a funny
note. It came in the mail the day after, and it was SUCH a treat
to get mail!!

Mom: Ah, I see. I would send you gas money to come and visit but
it's gonna cost a few hundred for your father and me to redo our
wills...

Yeah, my church hands out carnations. I don't want one. I am
not a mother, and I don't *have* a mother. Besides, I hate cut
flowers. It's so depressing when they die.

I don't. I say 'No thank you' and walk on by. No biggie.
