Good for him. When someone's humor, or prank, shows hostility,
it is a red flag. Letting a fiance think that you may have
dumped them is hurtful. There's nothing funny about it.

Yeah especially if you've implied they were physically abusive
to you when they weren't at all! >:(

I recently read one story in which the birthday guy’s fiancee
moved out of the apartment, going NC, and his father called
asking if he had abused her. Turns out she was planning a
surprise party for him at a friend’s house and thought it was a
good idea to freak him out about her leaving. One of her
friends floated the “abuse” story on SM and it blew up, causing
him to think that he was going to be arrested for DV. One of
the friends in the know finally told him it was a prank. He
cancelled the wedding and possibly the relationship.

Here's the whole story. It's a hot mess. The topper for me was
that Fiancee decided she "didn't want to throw her idiot friend
under the bus" but was OK letting people think he abused her.
Here's hoping he walked away from her permanently.

Wow. When I clicked on that link, it brought me to the main page
of Best of Redditor Updates. But then, I was going to reply,
and then the whole URL came up. Now I found it. Wild story.

Not to mention, this could have serious personal, social, and
professional repercussions for the poor man involved. Worst case
scenario, if the police saw fit to believe the woman's
allegations, he could have even been imprisoned. Or on a lesser
note, if his workplace found out these accusations had been
made, the man could have been suspended from work, or sacked.

And even if everything got sorted out and everybody concerned
explained and apologised etc, there will by then have been
literally hundreds of people who heard the abuse story but
weren’t directly involved, and so might very well never have
heard any of the rest of it. Years later when they hear his name
mentioned all they’ll know is “Wait, wasn’t that the guy whose
girlfriend walked out after he beat her up?” Mud sticks.
