Re: Please help me think of an epic hostess gift

bigbadbetty, you are the psychic of the week —
I do love bringing food gifts, but I couldn’t really think of
anything that they can’t get there that I could bring them other
than something like some really nice halvah, but that’s not the
biggest gift. Nobody wants as much halvah as it would take to be
a big gift!
My husband just told me that he asked them if there was anything
they want us to bring from Israel (the husband is Israeli, so
they know what’s available here and what relatives usually bring
them or what they get when they visit here).
She answered: “The only thing I'd love to have from Israel is a
bottle of the olive oil from Kibbutz Degania A -- but I don't
know what kind of distribution is available in Tel Aviv. If it's
there, check it out. It's amazing." I have never heard of that
oil, so I looked it up on line.
You’re not gonna believe it.
There was no information on the website about how to buy it here
in Israel. But not only do they ship to the United States — they
have a subscription service!
So I think that just has to be the perfect gift. It almost
seems like we wished it true!
I already started the afghan, so maybe I’ll still do that, too.
Or I can save it for the next time I need a special gift for
someone.
I just love the personalized baking dishes on Etsy. I think that
is what I will get my future daughter-in-law for her upcoming
birthday.
Thank you all so much. What a great group of people with great
ideas.

How funny. I was thinking about flavored olive oils as a gift,
but wasn't sure if bottles would be a pain to bring on a plane.
It's great the olive oil they ask for ships to the US.

I gave 9”x13’ Pyrex casserole dishes to my nieces for Christmas,
etched with one of their late father’s favorite recipes, in his
own handwriting.
[/quote]
Would etching have any affect on the integrity of the pyrex? I
know that if you get even the smallest chip, they recommend not
using it for fear of it shattering, especially with high
temperature swings.

No complaints from the recipients yet. I did make sure to get
the heavy Pyrex, with the handles as part of the glass, & the
etching was on the outside bottom of the casseroles. So not
really sure, but haven’t heard of any problems.

Not the most fun gift, but I would go with a gift certificate
from something like Williams-Sonoma or Sur la Table. They can
get fancy kitchen gear if they like, but both places also sell
edible things, so no additional clutter if they don't want it.

This wouldn't immediately get to them (it would be a delayed
gift), but I'd be really tempted to pick up a small air fryer in
Manhattan and leave it in the apartment. Air fryers are
incredibly handy for quick meals, which might be useful for them
when they use the apartment again.
(five days in NYC; unfortunately, I bet they're going to be
busy. But if you have a breakfast or lunch free...I'm very
mobile)
