Baby Shower

I'm going to a baby shower this weekend. I haven't been to one
in years. I was thinking about a practical gift of diapers mixed
with a few board books for the baby. Does anyone else have good
suggestions?

How fun! Those sound like lovely gifts. Does the mother to be
have a registry somewhere that you could check?

I have taken to always buying in-season clothes (not PJs, etc.)
for tiny babies. Sports clothes, not cute little dresses, etc. I
try to get something that's easy to hold a baby in (i.e., not
two pieces, no flappy collars or jackets, etc.), but clearly
clothes, not sleepwear.
People often say, "Buy bigger sizes, because they grow so fast."
But many women I've known have ended up with no clothes for
their baby.
They have PJs and sleep sacks, because those are on the layette
lists.
But clothes to wear when they're awake are not.
The couple of times I did this when I was much younger and were
more the result of not being "informed," but both times the mom
said, "I was so glad! Your outfits were the only ones I had."
The other thing I've done is look for things that I thought were
really handy and for which a specialized version is SO much
better--snug-fitting dribble bibs that sop up dribbles at the
neck (because they touch the neck), booties that tie with a firm
cord (so they can't slip over the heel the way anything sock
elastic does). A really, really good baby nail scissors
(because most of the ones you buy in the drugstore are simply
not sharp enough to cut those thin, thin nails).

I usually put together a bag of things all new moms go through a
lot of: multipacks of onesies, bibs, socks, baby body wash,
shampoo, diaper rash cream, wash cloths, etc.
Like Toots, I always try to include an outfit the baby can wear
now. Nothing they need to "grow into" and nothing floofy (those
darling dresses are beautiful but how often do they really wear
them).

I bought Little Remedies New Baby Essentials Kit (6 piece kit
for babies nose and tummy) for my great niece. It wasn't on her
registry but just threw it in my Amazon cart. Her baby got
really sick and she was panicking because she didn't know where
she was going to get a saline spray for babies in the middle of
the night but then she remembered the essentials kit. Came in
really handy!

I think you're fine with diapers (can never have enough of
those!) and books.
Maybe some small receiving blankets or towels. . . not to wrap
the baby with but to throw over a shoulder when burping the
baby.

If you want to do diapers but want to "spruce it up" a bit, a
diaper cake is pretty easy to make. My daughter and I made one
this summer for a baby shower and it was easy and came out
looking pretty elegant, if I do say so myself. There are
ZILLIONS of videos on YouTube with instructions. For ours, we
rolled up the diapers and we made a 3-tier cake, and replaced a
few of the diapers with rolled-up onesies. Then I topped it
with a toy and put a sunhat (from the registry) on the toy.

I'd have loved to have gotten diapers and wipes! That's usually
what I buy people. (Nowadays they hold "sprinkles" for later
kids and ask for those anyway.)
Random advice: Don't buy cozy blankets. Baby only needs one or
two and we have so many we didn't use and I feel bad about it.
Burp cloths are super useful though. You need millions of those
with some kids.
