Most of the foods I hated as a kid, I still hate. I do have some
food sensitivities, so I am always apprehensive about trying new
things in case they trigger a reaction. But, yesterday, I tried
a nectarine again after 5 years or so, and I really liked it!

Hated egg salad as a kid, love it now.
Hated cream of wheat, still hate it.

Mine is cabbage. When I was a kid, my mom made these cabbage
rolls...ground beef wrapped in cabbage baked in the oven. I
remember the putrid smell. I was never a ground beef fan either.
They were disgusting. I also hated mayo so I didn't like
coleslaw. We also had to pass a sauerkraut canning factory on
the way to one of our favorite restaurants. The stench was
unbelievable. Therefore cabbage must be the vilest substance!
As an adult, I tried a non-mayo-based spicy slaw. It was pretty
good. I had some tacos with a slaw - wait, these aren't bad!
Then I ventured out to grilled cabbage slices, delicious,
low-calorie, and cheap!

I associate cabbage with my childhood as well because my
grandmother cooked with it a lot. My automatic reaction to the
smell of cabbage cooking is to become ravenously hungry!!
I love grilled/roasted cabbage slices.

Cabbage! Oh my goodness -- there is a difference between the
types of cabbages.
When I was a small child (younger than 8 years old), my
grandmother made stewed/boiled/cooked RED cabbage. I remember
walking into her home for family get-togethers and just smelling
the stink of red cabbage and cringing.
Fast forward years later, my Polish ex brought me over for
dinner to meet his parents for the first time. I walked into the
home and the smell was awesome!
What was for dinner? Golabki (pronounced "gaw WOAMB kee") which
is WHITE cabbage leaves stuffed with some sort of meat. I was
surprised as to how much I loved the cabbage dish!
Fast forward again -- I went to dinner with my LDH at a German
restaurant. I ordered the red cabbage side dish, thinking that
it would bring back memories. And yes, it did. Memories of the
stink and the bad taste.
Red cabbage should not be cooked -- it's good fresh in a salad
and that's about it.
White cabbage? Is awesome in a cabbage soup (with onions,
potatoes, polish sausage), corned beef and cabbage, stuffed
cabbage, cole slaw, etc.

My mother was of Irish and German heritage. Her cooking was
very bland. She actually told me that she was afraid of spices.
Fortunately, when I was a little baby there were neighbor women
with babies who had more ‘interesting’ cuisines. There was Mrs.
Anginoli who taught Mom about lasagne and real marinara sauce.
Mrs. Balogh was Hungarian so we got to enjoy goulash and chicken
paprikas.
Another lady whose name I don’t recall gave us the glorious
cabbage dish we called ‘pigs in the blanket’. Ground meat, rice
and seasonings were rolled in leaves of white cabbage. These
were baked with plain tomato sauce, brown sugar and thinly
sliced onions.
Cabbage is a good thing.

I just googled Golabki. That was the dish that made me think I
hated cabbage. We all have different tastes!

I never knew that red and white cabbage cooked up differently!
I'm not sure I've ever bought red cabbage and I know I never
cooked it.
My mom made boiled dinners a few times a year and I don't recall
liking most of it. I did like the corned beef in sandwiches the
next day. A few years back, feeling nostalgic, I made a boiled
dinner and loved the cabbage. I guess I changed.
And while on the subject of cabbage, last night I roasted
cabbage wedges in the oven and they were delicious!

I hated refried beans as a kid and into adulthood, but I don't
mind a bit of it now.
