I would call Amazon again and speak to a supervisor. Not to be
all entitled, but because often they have authority to do things
that line workers don't. And I would mention the changing story
that the first person gave you.
If all else failed, I would take them up on the option of their
       sending thanks.

I wonder how Amazon would handle things if the package was
harassing? Unfortunately, there are people who would spend money
on "gifts" that would upset the recipient.
I might also take Amazon up on their offer, but within the thank
you mention that I didn't know who the person was and would love
to know. It's possible the sender doesn't realize what happened.

I can't even imagine this happening. It sounds like some sort
of scam but I can't figure out how it would work.

Thank you to everyone who replied.
The mystery was solved last night (before I took action) when a
cousin emailed me that her Amazon account showed that the
present she ordered for us had been delivered earlier in the
day. My cousin said she wanted to be sure that we had found the
       package.
I replied with a nice thank you and told her I would have
thanked her immediately, except that there was no indication who
       the sender was!

If it is sent as a gift, you can "thank" them via amazon.
If not, I usually say "To whomever gifted me the wonderful
       teapot, thank you!" on Facebook.
       glad someone spoke up
