       I've always loved roasted turkey with gravy made from the
       juices. We make our own cranberry sauce with the whole berries.
       We always have mashed potatoes and usually green beans. This
       year we are going to have sweet potato pie instead of pumpkin.
       What I like best though, is having a toasted turkey breast
       sandwich with mayo the next day.

       I have all the traditional Thanksgiving foods, except I always
       get a smoked turkey. It has more taste than regular turkey. I
       hate to admit this, but my preference for cranberries is the
       jelled stuff that comes in a can. You just open the can and plop
       it into a dish. If there are going to be a lot of people, I also
       make that cranberry relish in the Cuisinart with fresh
       cranberries, an orange, and sugar.

       the bloody mary(s) I drink while preparing the meal;
       the appetizer plate with olives, sweet pickles, etc.;
       dark meat from the turkey;
       sweet potatoes (but not with a bunch of syrup and marshmallows);
       pie and coffee.
       I like roasted veggies, but we always have the "traditional"
       green bean casserole.

       My cousin always Bar-B-Qd one turkey because the one in the oven
       wasn't enough for the big group gathered.
       But my favourite of the entire meal was the carrot cake.
       Cousins friend who baked the cake also baked for local
       restaurants.
       The stuffing and also jello/coolwhip mold were a once a year
       treat. Our group was busted up a few years ago as the 'kids'
       got married and went to celebrate with in-laws and their parents
       followed.

       When I was a child there were holiday dishes that were a given
       even if they made no sense or few if any family members liked
       them.
       Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter dinners always began with a
       glass of tomato juice and a relish tray. For some reason,
       although we drank orange, apple and grape juice on a regular
       basis, tomato juice was considered something to be reserved for
       holidays. The relish tray consisted of celery stalks, olives,
       radishes and pickle slices. It was an odd way to start a meal
       but, thinking back on it, the relish tray was always present
       when we went to the Cedar Inn for my parent’s anniversary
       dinner.

       I was reading old Thanksgiving menus from restaurants and
       magazines for a presentation I had to do at work, and the relish
       tray was a standard going back to Victorian times. They usually
       added carrot sticks as well. Also, they mentioned in the 1950s
       menu I found that tomato/clam juice was the appetizer of choice.

       It could be a regional thing. I grew up in the midwest and I'm
       not sure about today, but back in my day a relish tray was a
       usual thing. (Not the tomato juice, but the celery, carrot
       sticks, olives, and so on.)

       peony, I grew up in the Northeast. I don't know if it was a
       regional thing so much as something that was fashionable in the
       latter half of the 20th century. I know a lot of restaurants
       used to put out a dish of things like olives, cheese, celery,
       like they put out a basket of bread, like an appetizer. I think
       that's where people got it from, or vice versa.
       I think many people still put out that little appetizer thing
       before meals, but, probably with different stuff.

       Growing up, Thanksgiving and Christmas were always the same
       meal. It always started with sweet gherkin pickles and
       manzanita olives. Both of those are still my tradition, though
       I'm the only one who can stand either.
       Turkey
       Stuffing (my mom broke up the bread, sauteed the onions and
       celery, the whole thing.)
       Mashed potatoes
       Peas with onions
       Rolls
       Lime Jell-O with mandarin oranges (still my tradition and no one
       else loves it like me)

       My family isn't originally from the US. We celebrate with plenty
       of food on Thanksgiving but not the traditional American feast.
       I eat turkey and mashed potatoes plenty throughout the year so
       It wasn't a big deal to have it on that one day.
       It wasn't until I started working and the company provided
       Thanksgiving lunch that I tasted stuffing. I love it! Especially
       the ones with big chunky bread pieces.
