       Colorful Regional Sayings or Phrases
By: Hmmm Date: October 5, 2021, 2:40 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
On the old site, there was a thread of colorful phrases or
sayings. I seem to remember most of them were of US Southern
origin. I ran across an article today of Texas sayings many I
had either not heard or hadn't heard in a long time.
Please share some from your region.
Here's a few from the article.
       Being Boastful
       He can strut sitting down.
       He chamber-of-commerced it.
       Honest
He’s so honest you could shoot craps with him over the phone.
If I say a hen dips snuff, you can look under her wing for the
       can.
       Dishonest
So crooked that if he swallowed a nail he’d spit up a corkscrew.
She’s more slippery than a pocketful of pudding.
       Brave
Brave as the first man who ate an oyster.
She’d charge hell with a bucket of ice water.
       Argumentative
She’s so contrary she floats up-stream.
He’ll tell you how the cow ate the cabbage.
       Unsophisticated
He’s so country he thinks a seven-course meal is a possum and a
       six-pack.

My DH's family is from Texas
He'll sometimes say someone is "All hat, no cattle" = full of
hot air/all talk that you can't back up

There are various versions of that format current in the UK. One
is 'All mouth and trousers' for a man who is both verbally and
sexually pushy. Another, for a woman, is 'All fur coat and no
knickers' - no explanation necessary, surely, except that UK
       knickers = US panties.

New York State and New England here.
       ‘Wicked’ as a positive intensifier.
For a really good baseball player, “He’s a wicked pitcher”.
A dinner compliment, “Those baked beans were wicked good, Mom!”
When a published photograph of someone was obviously taken years
       ago.
“That must be his Bar Mitzvah/Confirmation picture”.
I’m sure there are others I can’t recall at the moment.

       It’s me again.
I think this is a family thing instead of a regionalism but I
       love it.
When it’s a cloudy day and a bit of clear sky shows my German
Grandma would always say, “Good! There’s enough blue there to
       patch a Dutchman’s pants”
I never quite got what she meant but it was an optimistic thing
       to say.

Also New England here - I picked up one I use a lot. "How did
you like that sandwich?" "It's nothing I'd run uphill after."

I had never heard this but loved the imagery. I looked it up and
it is a saying of old of "Patch a Dutchman's breeches". Based on
the Dutch seafarer's wide blue trousers. Every time I look at a
sky like that, I'll have this saying in my head now.

I first knew it in my childhood as a question. When the weather
has been grim and someone says hopefully 'I think it's clearing
up - I can see some blue sky' the response is, 'is there enough
to make a Dutchman's trousers?' The image is of traditional
       Dutch trousers like these:

/>If you can really see that much blue in the sky, there really
       is
a good chance the sun will come out.

My stepmother used to say that too. She may have had German
       heritage.
