Halloween/Samhain Just Around the Corner
By: holly firestorm Date: October 3, 2021, 6:23 pm

I'm kind of sad that it looks like another non-Halloween/Samhain
for me. I used to love getting dressed up and going to a party
to see what everyone else came up with. But, for the past few
years, even before the plague, nobody I know seems to be doing
anything. Must be getting old. :(
If my home was bigger I would have a party, maybe not this year,
maybe next.

It won't be anywhere near the same but have you thought about
hosting a virtual party?

My plans for Halloween are to go to a virtual SJ Tucker concert.
I don't much like going to halloween parties, though i love
getting dressed up

I like handing out candy to kids, but I don't get many stopping
by. Small town, and the school, library, and fire station all
put on big do's within walking distance.

Please forgive my ignorance; I am wanting to learn. I did a
quick Google search of Samhain, as I do not know what it is. Is
it celebrated differently than Halloween?
I am finding that as I age that I have to create my own fun. If
I want to attend a costume party, then I may have to host one.
Yes, I think when conditions get better that you should host
one! The virtual option might be fun, too!
What about a social media costume contest? Invite your friends
to submit photos of their costume and then have everyone in the
group vote for a winner?
I am stupid busy this year (in fact, I should be working right
now!!!) I may not even greet trick or treaters. I have
previously talked about my whoo's with that, so I am thinking of
leaving a bowl with candy and disappearing for the evening. But
if my life was different, I may be looking for a way to
celebrate, too.

Some people celebrate Samhain more "religiously" than the
secular Halloween. It's a Wiccan/Pagan religious holiday that
symbolizes New Year, the time in the year where the "veil"
between the material and spiritual worlds is thinnest as well as
a Harvest holiday.
Thanks for the "virtual party" suggestion. But, I'm afraid it
wouldn't work for me. My laptop doesn't even accommodate Zoom
meetings.

Today, the notice went up in the lobby of our building that we
will have our traditional Halloween observance on October 30th.
Because our building is a hollow square with a landscaped
internal garden and a walkway with benches around the perimeter
it’s a perfect place for a children’s Halloween parade. Adults
often dress up and bring down baskets of treats for the
children. After the public party children and parents retreat
to their apartments for smaller gatherings.
We’ll be back from our vacation in time to participate and I
have a question for people here. At the end of August I found a
Warner Brothers approve Hogwarts Sorting Hat. It doesn’t sing
but it would be a very nice Halloween prop. All the parents
bring their cameras to get pictures of the fun.
I will be wearing a long purple cloak and a witch’s hat. Would
it be wrong of me to play Professor McGonnigal and place the
Sorting Hat over their child’s head for a picture taken by the
child’s parents. I wouldn’t necessarily be in the picture but my
robes might.
I just think the kids and their parents might find it fun.

It would be picky to point out that the sorting hat was used at
the beginning of the school year, not Halloween. So, I
won't.[emoji13] ;D
But, seriously, I'd check with the parents first. If it's OK
with them, I bet the kids would LOVE it! You should definitely
do it.

Oh, it would certainly be an optional thing. I’ll just bring
the hat to the party and put it on a bench next to our cauldron
of treats.
As i said, the hat doesn’t have a working mechanism so it won’t
sort but it would be a neat prop for a photo.
