I think it's perfectly reasonable not to tell them in advance,
it's the public surprise aspect of taking over an existing event
that annoys me. Have your reunion at the airport if you must, or
when they get home from school or something. Not in the middle
of graduation.

Sorry for being late to this party, but I agree with Miss
Manners. I don't think that the letter was fake. It was
probably written by someone who is relatively young and could
have been written in an emotional state.
I despise surprise parties and the public place situations. The
day after the one occasion where I was shanghaied into a
conference room under a false pretext I told my boss that
henceforth I would take my birthday off. In fact, the following
year I scheduled my vacation around it.
An old friend once pulled the restaurant thing on me in a
Mexican restaurant that had a mariachi band. I love that music
but hated having "Las Mananitas" sung to me in public with every
patron looking at me. Two days later I told him never to do
that again. We are still friends.
