Re: Gym equipment

This would irritate me, especially since there are only two
rowers at the gym. The thing that makes me insane is when
someone uses the squat rack to do bicep curls or some movement
that does not require a squat rack. I have gotten gym personnel
involved when that happens. A person who is squatting heavy MUST
use the squat rack, and someone doing bicep curls shouldn't be
using that area.
I probably would choose a different workout, but I might ask the
ladies how long they would be so that I could plan. I wouldn't
stand around and do nothing for ten minutes, but I would ask
when they expected to be done so that I could use the rowers
then.
I don't understand people who go to the gym and don't actually
work out!

When BeagleDaddy and I worked out together if there were two of
the same machine we shared one and left the other for someone
else to use. Our gym staff got involved when there was a man
who would put his towel and water bottle on one machine then do
shadow boxing for 30 minutes. He was told to either use the
machine or move his stuff so others could use it.

Yes, I think asking how long they would be is the right choice.
If there is a limited amount of a certain type of equipment, you
need to be efficient in your use of it.
This whole thread is making me very thankful that we set up a
home gym in our basement a couple of years ago. Now, I only have
to fight my husband for use of the squat rack.

Interesting points! I was two minded on this which is why I paid
a bit more attention than I typically would. I decided "not
rude" and it felt like the lane thread in that it would be nice
if they were aware of their surroundings and got off the
machines quickly, but that it wasn't outright against any rules
or guidelines. (I might have thought differently if I hadn't
been following that thread.)
Some additional info - the ladies didn't seem to be regular
exercisers. I'd go as far to say they're new to the exercise
thing and I thought that the intermittent rowing might actually
be at their level and the discussion in between rows was not
only a way to get out of the house and connect but also served
to pace them.
The gym has a 30 minute limit on cardio if someone is waiting.
They were under that so whether it was them on the rowers or
someone who was going all out, the angry pacer wasn't getting a
rowing machine either way. If he went to management or a trainer
I don't think they would have sided with him until the ladies
went to 35 minutes on the machines.
These are the only two rowers so I thought the dismount process
where they chatted a couple minutes was approaching rude, but,
still, I think they were under 30 minutes total.

Now, I've done something similar at the archery range and so
have many others. I'd set up my target and hang my bow at the
line and go do something else. But, here's the differences: 1)
That wasn't the only shooting spot on the line. There were
always a couple of other places someone could set up THEIR
target and shoot. But, (and it was almost always males doing
this) someone seemed to be just waiting for me to move...for a
minute. One time I said I would be right back and was just going
to the restroom and hadn't even left the range when some guy
just moved his special little self over to shoot where I had
been shooting 1 minute ago. A couple of times I wasn't even
leaving the line. But, since I'm a small older woman, I guess,
some guy and his kid practically pushed me out of the way so
they could shoot in the spot I was using. This would happen even
after I started printing my name as large as possible on the
target. 2) When I set up and then go to do something else it is
ALWAYS (if not going to the restroom for 3 minutes) to do
something for the range, give out equipment to new archers,
sweeping up the pavement, something like that. Something to
benefit our whole community.
As mentioned before, this happened even when it was MY target
that I had bought myself, not the range's target that I was
using.

I agree with you.
We are all sharing, at the gym. Meaning we are all taking turns.
And to take up a machine by using it NOT in the way it was
intended is taking it away from someone else. We have to do
that, of course--we're sharing. But to do that unnecessarily or
inappropriately is rude.
