The right lane
By: DCGirl Date: September 21, 2021, 8:18 am
---------------------------------------------------------
This is currently a hot topic of discussion in my local Next
Door group. I hope I can describe this so you can see it.
A man posted a picture, taken from his car, of an intersection
in our neighborhood along with a post about proper lane
etiquette. On one of the roads that meets there, the rightmost
lane has painted arrows indicating that it is for both right
turns and going straight at the intersection. The center lane
has no painted arrow, and the left lane has an arrow indicating
that it is for left turns. His picture shows cars waiting at the
light and clearly shows their license plate numbers.
His post reads in part, "Going straight? Please use the center
lane so that people who need to turn on Burke Center Parkway can
do so without sitting at the light."
As you might imagine, Next Door discussions can become very, um,
spirited, and the original poster got roasted by dozens of
people.
What do you all think?

I'll admit that it is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. If you are
not turning right and you have the option to move to the center
lane behind a car or two, I think it is the right thing to do.
It keeps traffic moving and creates less overall back up at a
light. For me, it is basic awareness and basing your actions on
how to improve overall traffic flow.

sometimes if you are not from the area, you don't see the arrows
until you are right on top of them. Until they put sideways
wheels on the cars, what are you gonna do?
Really, if that's a major complaint in his life, he needs to
take a chill pill and count his blessings. If it's making him
late for whatever, leave the house a little earlier.

I agree. But shaming people online is not the way to go. It’s
just one of life’s annoyances that you complain about and teach
your children to be aware of.

Yes, I have had that happen to me where you don't see the arrows
in time to make a change. Or you think you are going to make the
green light, but you don't.
There is an intersection like that near me. I sometimes am in
the right lane even though I am going straight through because I
need to turn right quickly after the intersection.
In the end, I think your last two sentences really sum it up.

It's a matter of courtesy to not block the right turn lane at a
light if you are going straight. But yeah, people do it all the
time. I've done it unintentionally before. It happens.
Sure, it's a bummer to be the one who gets stuck, but it's a
matter of what, a couple of minutes? Big deal. Let it go.
OTOH that poster was probably just letting off some steam. Not
necessarily the wisest way to do it, but certainly not cause for
roasting!

One of the things people have brought up is that a driver may
need to be in the right lane on the other side of the
intersection because they have a right turn coming up quickly
and may not be able to get over to the right lane easily if they
need to. Others have pointed out that, even though you can turn
right on a red light, it doesn't mean that you'll be able to
turn right on red based on traffic conditions.
The OP did come back and say, "Maybe I should have just thanked
the people who stay in the center lane to go straight, huh?"

I guess I don't see it as "shamming". Highly unlikely anyone
would be able to identify me or care to figure out who I am just
based on me being one car in a photo.

I just don't see it as *that* big of a deal. Like others have
said, you may not be able to turn due to cross traffic or
someone might need to be in that lane to turn right shortly
after the intersection. There are also people who stay in the
right hand lane to stay out of the way of those who gripe about
people going slow in the "fast lane". Although, IMO, not
blocking the "fast lane" only applies on highways and
interstates.....not surface streets with frequent stoplights.

It may be annoying to the people behind you. Believe me, I've
been there. But as long as it's legal, they are not doing
anything wrong. Like others said, they may not be familiar with
the area and it's better to stay safe rather than try to get out
of the way by weaving around.
