Re: First class or coach?

Traveling with others sometimes requires compromise. You might
not always get to eat at your choice of restaurant as others'
tastes and opinions need to be taken into consideration. But
traveling with others also requires giving others the space they
need to be comfortable, especially when it's not really
effecting you.
The update has me thinking that Missy might have a habit of
looking down on those who make choices that she deems "cheap". I
wonder if this might be clouding feelings about her decision. I
would give her the benefit of the doubt on this one... if she's
truly a snob, they will all know by the end of the trip.

A joint trip - even if only two people are going, never mind a
group - is always an exercise in negotiating the participants'
different requirements. Some people will happily rough it in
hostels and under canvas but insist on classy dinners. For some,
what they most want from a hotel is a pool plus spa; for others,
it's 'character' and a room with a view. Some people want
spontaneity, others want a timetabled plan. Some people will
consider the trip wasted if they don't see ALL the sights;
others mainly want to laze on the beach. If Missy's requirement
on the journey is first-class comfort, for whatever reason -
more leg-room, better food, it doesn't matter - I really don't
see why she shouldn't have it if she's willing to pay extra for
it. (Just as, if she has special requirements in a hotel room -
a bigger bed, better wi-fi, whatever - she would be perfectly
entitled to pay extra for a premium room.)
It's not as though the flight time is normally a social period;
even if the group is seated together, most people normally
either occupy themselves with a book, their electronic devices
or the in-flight movie, or just sleep. So she's not
cold-shouldering the rest of the group in any meaningful sense.
And, unlike most of the requirements I mentioned above, it
doesn't impinge on anyone else.

Good questions that are being brought up:
1) Yes it is okay to buy a more expensive entree...as long as
you don't make everyone pay for it.
Will you then want to go to more expensive restaurants? Will you
want to go where everyone else is?
2) Will you want to do more expensive activities? Would you pay
for others?
3_ Will you want to go to more expensive shopping?
4) Will you want to stay in your own room and not share with the
others?
5) How much do you want to do what they want and how much on
your own?
If it is just the plane ride that is one thing...but often this
desire for "better" permeates life.

I have been following Missy's facebook posts about her trip. I
don't necessarily look at all 70+ pictures per day, but enough
to keep up.
FWIW, she was not the only one flying first class....at least
one other did. I don't know if her DH didn't know or what.
Missy is enjoying the experience of island hopping and being in
a foreign country with knowledgeable guides.
Her DH relayed that she's NOT HAPPY with the accommodations,
though. The "private boat" is a catamaran owned by the sis and
her DH. It "barely" sleeps six (2 to a room) and they all share
a (very small) bathroom. And a continental breakfast and salad
and fruit trays for lunch is "not worth the $240 they paid for
food!" They eat dinner ashore on their own dime.
It sounds like she's making the best of it and her posts don't
hint at any displeasure.

Thanks for the update.
Glad Missy's posts indicate that she's enjoying the trip.
As to the "insider information", it's inevitable that on the
trip with a group of traveler's some things will be not to your
taste. Just something to make the best of.
I've always thought those sleeper catamarans looked cool and
fun. Never looked them up until now though They certainly are
cozy.
As to the breakfasts and lunches, I had some really good
continental breakfasts when I was in Europe. A surprising amount
of delicious cold meats, cheeses, and hard boiled eggs. I really
need some protein to keep me going. Whether or not they're
paying a lot of money for what they are getting depends on what
they're getting and exactly how many meals (e.g. 2 meals a day
for 5 days, 7 or 10). At this point though, all this is go along
to get along and just enjoy!

The $240 was for 6 days of breakfast, lunch, snacks and some
beverages. Since they made port many times, I'm sure the ladies
purchased some of their own to have while on board.
I think it's quite a reasonable price when you consider they
paid nothing for the use of the boat and it's captain. I'm
pretty sure a charter of equal caliber would be substantially
more.
According to Missy's DH, she watches the Real Housewives of
EveryCity and was expecting/had delusions of something the lines
of the excess and luxury of the trips on those shows.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I am not impressed with Missy's
DH gossiping like that about her. Missy herself didn't post any
"hints of displeasure" publicly.

Yeah, $240 for 6 days is fine - especially since the boat and
captain is free. I should be so lucky! And I've never seen
Housewives so I'd consider it all luxury!
Missy's husband has been talking to one of his buddies, oogyda's
DH. That's normal, non-gossipy.
Maybe what started the conversation is that Missy's DH is not a
fan of Housewives and so exclaimed to oogyda's DH happiness at a
week being home without hearing it!?

Admittedly, there may be some malice in his comments. Deserved
or not, I can't say. She has a long history of overspending and
"just had to" make several purchases related to this trip.
Beyond the "splurge" on the first class tickets. So, yeah....he
might be enjoying that it's not all as wonderful as she wanted
and sharing that with his friend.....whose wife happens to be
there working with them.
According to him, they've come close to splitting up over her
spending (this was before we've known them). What I've observed
myself is her hiding purchases in the trunk of the car to bring
into the house when he's gone.

I wondered if I might have missed something. I missed the detail
that he's venting to just one person.
