First class or coach? Update #23
By: oogyda Date: August 22, 2021, 7:20 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Missy is the wife of one of DH's buddies.
She and a group of her friends had planned and mostly paid for
an international trip last year that got postponed. They are
leaving soon to *finally* have their trip. The rundown of the
group is 2-3 very close friends with a couple of "secondary"
friends like Missy. There is also the sister of one of primary
friends who moved to Greece with her DH when they retired. The
plan is to travel by private boat around many of the islands and
it's the sister who has made those arrangements.
Missy and her friends made their own arrangements to get to
Greece and are all booked on the same flight. Missy is flying
first class. She is the only one out of the group that can
really afford it and doesn't think she should have to settle for
less since it's such a long flight. From what her DH says, none
of the group know about this yet.
Any thoughts?

It sounds like a great way of staying a "secondary" friend.

Exactly.

It would be nice for the travel group to be a real group but
there are several factors to consider.
Is Missy very tall? Does she have a medical condition? If so,
the 1st. Class seat might make sense.
How long is the flight? A direct flight from an East coast US
or Canadian city should be doable in coach. We’ve taken
business class when we flew from NYC to Argentina. Otherwise,
priority Coach to destinations in Southern Europe have been just
fine.

So Missy is the only one booked for first class and the rest for
coach? I would think that is fine. If her alternate plans don't
effect anyone else, then it really wouldn't bother me. To be
honest, I don't do well if I'm on a lengthy trip seeing the same
people day after day. A little break lets me be a better person.
So if flying alone in first class let's Missy be a better travel
champion, then what's the harm?
Now, my answer would be different if she switched everyone's
ticket without letting them know. Or if Missy was obnoxious
about the arrangements bragging about how she's able to do
better things.

It's fine. When I travel with friends or family, we rarely
manage to get seats all together anyway. I never really see
anyone socializing on planes either unless they're with
children. Most people read or watch a movie. They can socialize
as an entire group in Greece.

If she's a "secondary friend" then I doubt anyone will be
heartbroken.
Just tell them "That's all I could get."

I don't understand why it's anyone else's business. She could
just as easily have gotten a free upgrade.

Unless they all booked together and got seats together why
should anyone care where she is sitting.

If they each booked their own flights, I don't see a problem
with it.
