The first time the volunteer coordinator took us newbies on a
tour of the animal shelter, she instructed us to keep our voices
soft and low pitched as we went through the kennels, and don't
engage with the dogs.
When we were growing up, neighbors had a toy poodle who barked
endlessly whenever anyone came over - and they were constantly
shouting at him to stop. I grew up thinking all small dogs were
yappy.
