Agreed! In fact, I'm doing this today. My feet are a bit
swollen, so I figured it was the perfect day to know if these
shoes were going to be comfortable. I do try to ensure that my
floors are clean and that I'm not scuffing them, but you really
learn so much more than the few minutes in the store.

We did this with a pair of shoes for my daughter. She knelt down
(at home, on the carpet) to tie the laces and the store wouldn't
take the shoes back because there was a crease where the shoe
bent. ::) I said I didn't understand why that made them
unsellable, since their demo shoes looked exactly the same (if
not worse). They still wouldn't take the shoes back.
So sometimes, one tries to do the right thing and it doesn't
       work out.

True. No matter how long you march up and down the aisle of the
shoe shop asking yourself ‘Are these comfortable?’, you’re never
walking quite naturally. So if you think they seem okay and buy
them, when you put the same shoes on in your own home you
sometimes realise after half a dozen steps that they just don’t
work for you, to the extent that you wonder how the heck you
       ever thought they would.

Well, now I'm really PO'd on your behalf! They should have
checked the bottom of the shoes. Shoes that have been worn
outside get a slightly worn look almost immediately. They should
have taken them back and you should have complained when they
didn't. I hope you at least gave them a crap review on Yelp or
       something!
