Also, there are places that rent high-end pieces for special
events. Perhaps this person should look into such a service
rather than defrauding the store!

Yes, this is a time for Rent the Runway or another of those kind
of companies/stores. She could find something really nice and
also shop ethically.

I'm on the side with the 'Fraud and unethical' people. That is
a practice that I would never do.
Unfortunately, these rental places only carry clothing for
'normal' sized people. They never have my size. I've asked.

What if you spill wine or food on the dress? What if there is
dancing and you get all sweaty?
If you've no shame, on January 4th, you walk into a smaller,
less cosmopolitan branch store where you bought the dress and
claim if you had noticed the wine stains and cigarette smell and
how wrinkled the dress was, you'd never have purchased it.
Department manager wasn't believing it, and told her she'd have
to take it back to the store in Bigger City, where she purchased
it.

If you can't rent a dress, you can buy it and then sell it at a
consignment shop.

Yeah, as others have said, I think it's ethically dubious. I
don't blame the husband for objecting. It's something that
wouldn't sit well with me either.

This is a good idea. At least that way, the woman in question
could recoup some of her costs. (Although obviously it means
she'll no longer have the nice dress!).
Also - I think this woman needs to calm down a bit regarding her
10 year reunion. Real life isn't like 'Romy and Michelle's High
School Reunion' - if she's so worried about "impressing the cool
kids", she needs some perspective. My 10 year reunion was
actually a really fun occasion. People had grown up a lot, and
everyone was very pleasant. The old cliques - the "popular
kids", the "nerds", the "surfies" and "skaters" and "goths" -
were things of the past. I reckon even if this woman was to
attend in jeans and a nice top* she'd still have a good time!
*assuming the reunion isn't somewhere like a country club with a
strict dress code, etc!

I didn't attend any of my high school reunions but I've seen
online pictures. The women just wore nice but ordinary outfits.
Think knee length dress or business casual. If course you can
look spectacular in those types of outfits, but you don't have
to break the bank for those type of outfits, AND can wear those
again over and over.
I'm curious what dress the LW is looking at. Is is something you
can buy an inexpensive version of? Like the classic little black
dress? Also, affordable accessories are our friends.

I get it if you want to "rent" a dress...but go to a business
that does that like "Rent the Runway"

You know, if you are at the same event as this "perpetrator" you
can always grab the tag and say, "Oops! You forgot the tag. Let
me get that for you," while clipping the tag from her dress.

A woman sent an email to a local DJ asking if he's poll his
listeners for some advice. Here's the story:
Her 10 year high school reunion is coming up and she has worked
very hard to lose weight and tone up and she feels she looks
great. She went looking for a dress for the reunion and found
one that makes her look fabulous but it is twice the budget she
and her husband agreed to spend.
Her solution was to buy the dress, wear it to the reunion but
tuck the price tags inside the dress then return the dress after
she wore it so she could get her money back.
In her words "my husband flipped his lid" at this suggestion and
told her it was the same as stealing the dress and it would be
rude to return an item she already wore.
She explained she had done this a number of times before they
were married and didn't see it as a problem.
The vast number of callers to the DJ agreed with the husband.
Personally, I find this not only rude but extremely risky. What
if you spill wine or food on the dress? What if there is
dancing and you get all sweaty? Then they won't take the dress
back and you have spent money you didn't have on a dress that
you may not wear again.
Lately I've seen dressy clothing with the tag put in a place
where it cannot be tucked inside when the item is worn. Now I
see why.

I've returned clothes after I realized it was uncomfortable or
turned out to be too sheer, but that feels different than
purposely buying expensive outfits to wear once and return.
Reminds me of people buying a giant TV for the Superbowl knowing
they'll return it right after. Some retailers won't take it back
or charge a restocking fee since they're wise to those tactics.
I've occasionally gotten very brave and bought shoes via catalog
or on line. I wear them around the house for a few hours, for
several days, and have returned the ones that have been
uncomfortable...but, not if I've worn them out.
This seems reasonable to me. We can't always tell after a
two-minute try on that shoes will be comfortable for us, so
wearing them inside for a bit is fine. Wearing them to a party
and then returning them? No. You should have tested them at home
first.

Agreed! In fact, I'm doing this today. My feet are a bit
swollen, so I figured it was the perfect day to know if these
shoes were going to be comfortable. I do try to ensure that my
floors are clean and that I'm not scuffing them, but you really
learn so much more than the few minutes in the store.
