Also, there are places that rent high-end pieces for special
events. Perhaps this person should look into such a service
rather than defrauding the store!

I had the same thought- rent something or figure out a way for
the dress she wants. Maybe ask if it'll be discounted, see if
it's available online. Take a picture and ask friends if someone
has something similar she can borrow. There are ethical ways to
approach this situation. Wearing and returning is not one.

I used to work at a maternity store, and we often had some
really nice "special occasion" style dresses, particularly
around holidays, especially Christmas. We took to Swiftach the
price tag square in the middle of the chest of the dress, so
that it couldn't be "tucked in".
I agree that it is dishonest to "purchase" a garment expressly
for the purpose of wearing it to an event and returning it
afterwards. It might not be quite as bad as shoplifting, but
the same spirit of dishonesty is present. It's different if
something happens and you end up not going/wearing the item and
want to return it.

I've known people who have done that. I think it's really
sleazy, and it's also a HUGE risk. Even if I could trust myself
to keep an item of clothing absolutely pristine through a day of
wearing (or evening, or whatever), who needs the stress?
One person I know who did that had her mother return the dress
to the store, and according to her, the clerk actually sniffed
the armpits of the dress. :-X
Also, I would be livid to find out that a garment I bought brand
new had actually been worn. Blech.

I think I would be sweating profusely just out of nervousness
about doing this. And of course, I always spill on myself.

That's a great solution to this problem!

Completely unethical. Having worked retail in my younger years,
we were always on alert for people returning things that were
worn. I get that no one wants to spend big bucks on something
they plan to wear once. But it is so unfair to the retailer to
do this.
I have tons of stories of people getting caught. There was one
woman in my hometown who bought a dress from the super fancy
local store that she wore to her son's wedding and then returned
the dress. The store owner thought that is what she had done so
got her hands on some wedding photos and confronted the woman.
Another friend told me her sister would buy things like David
Yurman jewelry and wear a few times and then return them after
two weeks and then would go to a different store and sometimes
buy the same items. She got caught when she bought a piece from
a small custom jeweler in our city and posted a photo on
Instagram with the jeweler's hashtag. Since it was a custom
piece, when she tried to return it the designer remembered
seeing the post and asked her why she was returning it if she
had already worn it. She tried to claim at first she hadn't but
the designer brought up her post and then she said she just
didn't like it after all. Thankfully, the designer had a 7 day
return policy so the sister got stuck with the $750 necklace.
My sister was manager of the Young Women's department at
Marshall Fields. Post homecoming and prom, she was always stuck
with doing the sniff tests and telling mostly mom's that she
would not be accepting the dresses back. She hated that time of
year.

I agree! Although, to be honest, I kind of knew places like
this exist, but never really thought about them until YDD had
occasion to use one. She had a rare opportunity to ***DRESS
UP*** beyond her normal means and rented a fabulous dress. I
was impressed she knew/thought about it as an option.

Yes, this is a time for Rent the Runway or another of those kind
of companies/stores. She could find something really nice and
also shop ethically.

And social media or Insta - I feel like this is a problem her
village could solve with a quick reach out. There are also apps
where you take the pic of something and can get similar shopping
suggestions.

I've returned clothes after I realized it was uncomfortable or
turned out to be too sheer, but that feels different than
purposely buying expensive outfits to wear once and return.
Reminds me of people buying a giant TV for the Superbowl knowing
they'll return it right after. Some retailers won't take it back
or charge a restocking fee since they're wise to those tactics.
