Rude, Theft, or Money Saver

A woman sent an email to a local DJ asking if he's poll his
listeners for some advice. Here's the story:
Her 10 year high school reunion is coming up and she has worked
very hard to lose weight and tone up and she feels she looks
great. She went looking for a dress for the reunion and found
one that makes her look fabulous but it is twice the budget she
and her husband agreed to spend.
Her solution was to buy the dress, wear it to the reunion but
tuck the price tags inside the dress then return the dress after
she wore it so she could get her money back.
In her words "my husband flipped his lid" at this suggestion and
told her it was the same as stealing the dress and it would be
rude to return an item she already wore.
She explained she had done this a number of times before they
were married and didn't see it as a problem.
The vast number of callers to the DJ agreed with the husband.
Personally, I find this not only rude but extremely risky. What
if you spill wine or food on the dress? What if there is
dancing and you get all sweaty? Then they won't take the dress
back and you have spent money you didn't have on a dress that
you may not wear again.

It's rude and wrong, in my opinion. Many stores are not naive
that this is what some "customers" do, and will take the
"return" because it is their policy, but this is not okay to do.

It's clearly unethical. I'm pretty sure that most stores have a
policy that prohibits that, so doing it is dishonest.
I understand this is common practice. You see it in movies and
TV shows. I suppose if you're super careful and somewhat lucky,
you can get away with it.
Look, if she lost a bunch of weight, then there is more than one
dress in the world that will make her "look fabulous". So that
argument is specious. What she really wants to do is "look
fabulous" in what is probably a designer gown so that she can
not only show off her new figure, but her ability to afford $$$$
clothes!
Her husband is right. And even if the radio audience had voted
for her, is it worth losing her husband's esteem to get this
dress?

We bought a dress for a dance at my daughter's school.
Unfortunately, she was sick and couldn't go, so I returned it
the following week. The first thing the clerk did before she
started processing the return was sniff the dress (I assume for
perfume or body odors). I did know someone who had done the same
as the wife in the OP, so I understood, but this was the first
time I had seen a clerk checking the item.
I agree with the husband. The wife needs to buy a dress she can
afford and not try to defraud the store.

I agree this woman shouldn't have bought this dress, wore it and
then returned it. I know a couple whose fridge stopped working.
Since they had to wait for a couple of days before it could be
repaired they bought a chest freezer and put all their frozen
food in that. After the fridge was back working they returned
the freezer for a full refund. They don't see anything wrong
with that. I, on the other hand, do.

I've known people who have done that. I think it's really
sleazy, and it's also a HUGE risk. Even if I could trust myself
to keep an item of clothing absolutely pristine through a day of
wearing (or evening, or whatever), who needs the stress?
One person I know who did that had her mother return the dress
to the store, and according to her, the clerk actually sniffed
the armpits of the dress. :-X
Also, I would be livid to find out that a garment I bought brand
new had actually been worn. Blech.

Agree, rude. The return policy is meant so that if you get home
and decide that an item isn't quite what you want that you can
return it. It is not designed so that you can borrow clothing to
wear. I feel for her, as there have certainly been things
outside of my budget that I wanted, but the solution is not
return the item after wearing.
People like this ruin the return policy for others. I recently
had an important outing that I wanted to look nice at. I really
appreciated the opportunity to try on a few things at home where
I could mix and match until I found the outfit that I liked the
best.

I agree that it's unethical and also pretty dumb. What happens
if she spills on the dress? Then she's stuck with a very
expensive outfit she can't wear anymore.

It's too bad they can't design a tag that once heated up to
normal body temperature waits about an hour and then begins
flashing a bright red beam of light and starts making a beeping
sound that gets progressively louder and louder! Maybe the
light could project the word "stolen" on a nearby surface! And
if the wearer tries to cut the tag off, a siren shrieks.
Added entertainment for the folks she's trying to impress! ;D

There was a Blanche (Golden Girls) episode about this. She
bought a dress, and Dorothy spilled wine on her.
I think it is dishonest. I wouldn't want to be the next person
to buy a used item for a new price. I'm also big fan of buying
what you can afford. I'm a no fuss no fuss kind of girl though.
