Lack of Planning on Your Part -
By: sandisadie Date: July 8, 2021, 11:43 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Does Not Constitute an Emergency on My Part. Grrrr!!! Two
people in my household have undertaken to extend the height, by
about a foot, of a trellis that extends about 15 feet across the
back of my house. Accordingly, some planning, on paper,
occurred before the project was begun. Each extension consists
of two wood pieces bolted to the existing uprights. There are
eight uprights. The very important item to be done is to make
sure that the top of the trellis, which is covered with a top,
is slightly slanted to one end so that rainwater can run off the
lower end. So, what happened? All the extensions were cut the
same size and then stained and bolted in place. Then a string
was stretched from one end to the other and it was discovered
that all but two of the extensions have to be removed; some
shortened, but most of them must be discarded and new ones cut.
(This is not just straightforward cutting of the pieces. In
order to match the size of the original uprights the wood to
make the extensions has to be cut to the correct width as well
as length.
When I was told why this extra work was being done instead of
the trellis being completed today my remark was "why didn't you
stretch the string after installing the extensions that are at
each end of the trellis first". My remark was met with a blank
stare. So my vines will be left on the ground for several more
days I'm told.
What kind of poor planning (or no planning) has occurred to mess
up your plans?

I think I understand your angst, but I have a few question . . .
1. Were you consulted on the project before it began? Did you
agree/approve of the project beforehand?
2. OR did you say "this is something that I would like to do and
someone else took over the project for you, not doing it to your
satisfaction?
2. You said the planning was done on paper, I take it you were
not part of the planning stages. Why not?
3. What are the ages of the two people involved? Teenagers? or
even unskilled people trying to surprising you with an upgrade
to your trellis? I'd give them a pass . . . Your remark being
met with blank stares tells me that they didn't really know what
they were doing. I think that there's a learning curve involved
and patients should be employed.
4. Where is the emergency on your part?
I guess I'm just a bit confused with your post. Sorry, maybe I'm
reading more into it than what is necessary.
For people messing up my plans with poor planning? I don't have
a specific example but if someone offers to do something for me,
instead of me having to do it myself, I generally bite my tongue
and let them do it their way instead of dictating to them how it
should be done (according to my way).

Sorry if I have confused anyone. The husband and wife doing the
work are age 60. They did the same thing with a much smaller
trellis last year which turned out fine. I was involved with
the planning, talking and on paper,of this project. We did
discuss the issue with rainwater draining and having to slant
the top slightly. "lack of planning on your part, etc" is a
saying which is on a metal plate in our garage and is referred
to by the male on occasion. They assured me that the project
would take a few days and would be finished by tomorrow. Lack
of planning, or following the plans, is quite normal for this
guy, but I was hoping that with his wife as his helper
everything would go as planned. Thankfully, this time, there
isn't an emergency.

well, I did it to myself: I was cutting 1/4" plywood to
resurface my MIL's picnic table (because the seat and tabletop
are literally rotting in several spots, but we can't afford the
2x6's at today's wood prices, and I figured just putting a
smooth surface over it would buy us another couple of years; the
frame is very worn, and the legs wick water, so that may be all
we'll get out of it anyway).
I measured the length of the seats, and assumed that was the
length of the table as well. The table is 10.5" longer.
So just when I thought I was done, I had to cut a second piece
of wood to deal with the gap. Another 30 minutes or so, all told
(measuring, marking, setting up, cutting, sanding briefly,
drilling holes...)
The order in which you do things is crucial to the efficiency of
a project. it's very easy for people to get them wrong.
