Things you just don't want to eat anymore
By: Hmmm Date: June 9, 2021, 2:51 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Last night my DH and DS talked about food we just don't want to
eat anymore after having it too frequently at some point in your
life.
For me, it is American Cheese slices. I was never a big fan as a
child, but they were the only option of presliced cheese that
made it easy to put on a sandwich or burger or to make a grilled
cheese sandwich. I can handle them if is melted but can not eat
it on a cold sandwich. It is also my least favorite cheese for
grilled cheese.
For my son, it is Chicken Piccata. I probably served it once or
twice a month from the time he was 2 to about 16. It was just a
super easy weeknight meal that we all liked until I burned
everyone out on it.
For DH it is grilled chicken. His Dad would grilled chicken
quarters almost every weekend when he was growing up. He'd grill
them, mop with some bbq sauce and serve. I had them a couple of
times. Not much flavor at all and either rubbery or burnt skin.
It was his seeing I had bought a package of chicken quarters
that got the conversation started because he was having
flashbacks.
edited to fix typo

haha yes!
I loved eating boiled silverside (a cut of beef) as a kid. It
boiled for hours and we would eat it every time we went to our
Grandparents house, with roast veggies. My husband grew up
eating it every week and then again the next day on sandwiches.
He can't stand it!
Many years ago we were in the supermarket and I said 'oh how
about we get a silverside?' and he said 'that's how people get
divorced!'

never heard of a silverside, gonna look it up. Boiled for hours,
hmmm, I might pass too!
I no longer drink juice or soda, for the most part - way too
much sugar. Doughnuts also have lost their charm for me.
I see silverside comes out like a New England boiled dinner,
which I have had many times, but not lately. I am off meat
mostly.

I use to love meatloaf. I don't hate it now but lost my taste
for it and only eat it if I have to.
Tomato sauce. I don't eat spaghetti and meatballs or lasagne
(two former favorites) nowadays just because of the sauce.
Although I still appreciate the beauty of cake designs, I can't
remember the last time I was interested in eating one even
though they bring cake/cupcakes at work for birthdays (pre
Covid). I used to adore cupcakes.

I'm with VintageGal regarding the juice, soda an donuts. I'd be
fine if I never ate another hotdog the rest of my life.

Fast food. I don't want to eat McDonald's, Wendy's, Jack in the
Box, Arby's, etc. It's just not tasty enough to be worth the fat
and calories. I'd rather eat anything out of my fridge or
pantry!

Girl Scout cookies. They taste cheap and dry to me now.

I'm the same way. I would occasionally still have a couple of
crunchy tacos from Taco Bell, but the last time they were just
not good. Now if I want a crunchy taco, I either make them or
wait till we go to a TexMex restaurant. I will snatch from
Whataburger fries from my son when he goes there.

When my youngest daughter was in Girl Scouts I was the cookie
mother for three years running. Let me assure you that the
girls themselves/their personal troops get almost NOTHING from
cookie sales. The company that bakes the cookies gets a lot of
money for cookies that don't even taste good anymore and then
National takes the majority of the rest. By the end I was
quite disgusted by the whole thing. The kids would have been
better off negotiating as individual troops with either local
bakeries, cookie manufacturers (as in Keebler), or even local
stores to buy the products at cost, sell them at a dime or two
higher than the products would normally sell for, and keep the
profit.

I was a Girl Scout in the 90s, and the recipes have definitely
changed. That combined with Gramma Dishes (correct) info that
the troops really receive almost none of the money has lead to
me giving the troops a cash donation (usually the equivalent of
a couple of boxes) when I would see them selling in the “before
times” I think it’s way better than buying cookies I don’t
really want to eat anyway. I consider it a win/win and a good
way to “pay forward” the amazing experiences I had with my own
troop.
