Over-self-edited-for clarity
A big pet peeve of mine etiquette-wise:
At buffets with cheese boards--
don't hold up the line decorating your {{multiple}} crackers
with the serving knife.
One uses serving knife to scoop the cheeses onto your
plate. crackers & breads deposited onto your plate and spread on
your crackers/bread back at your table, with your own cheese
knife/ (bread knife) after you are seated.

I completely agree. I've also seen people breaking up broccoli
at the salad bar into smaller, more bite-sized pieces. It seems
like something that should be handled at the table, with a knife
and fork, and when people are behind the broccoli breaker it
really backs up the line.

Amen! The same applies at the dinner table as well if there's
passed butter/cheese/paté/tapenade etc. It is a serving knife
not your personal knife. You help yourself to the spreadable
deliciousness you will eat onto either your bread plate or your
dinner plate and then put some onto a bite sized portion of
bread/cracker with your personal knife.
I'll never forget my brother sharing his horror of my first
serious boyfriend in college & knowing it wouldn't last once I
got over my infatuation because he liberally used the serving
butter knife on his bread when it was being passed at Sunday
dinner. (I think he actually took the serving knife and used it
the rest of the meal) My brother said he was praying my
boyfriend wouldn't lick the knife when he was through because he
was making sure to get every speck of butter off the knife. I
didn't notice it (and several other issues with table manners)
at the table because I was sitting next to him.

The one that once drove me crazy was the man at the breakfast
buffet who liberally used the serving spoon on the scrambled
eggs to break them up into tiny little pieces, and stir, stir,
stir until it was more like soup. Okay, if the eggs are one big
lump, then yes, use the serving spoon to break off what you
consider a serving, then play with your food back at your table.
I have trouble eating eggs that I didn't prepare myself, and
that permanently turned me off.

I've always buttered my bread or put cheese on my crackers at
the station -- I had no idea until now it wasn't considered
polite. Most people seem to do this, and any time I've seen
someone put a chunk of butter on their plate instead, I thought
they were just weird! Too funny.
