What are 'finger lakes'?
Also - sorry, grammar nerd alert! - you surely meant "my best
friend invited mom and me"!

Used to live in upstate NY, so I think Finger Lakes is a
reference to the region (there's wine country with multiple
wineries and there are popular tours that include several
wineries, sometimes with themes so that six or so wineries are
part of a particular event that include a food + recipe as well
as the wines, or a lot of people just pick their own--like going
down the west side of one of the lakes). Of course, the Finger
Lakes are quite the tourist area, so there's a good deal to do
in addition to the wineries, but it's a fabulous way to spend a
weekend.

The Finger Lakes are a series of long, narrow, mostly parallel,
north/south oriented lakes in New York State south of Lake
Ontario and between Rochester and Syracuse. On a map and from
the air, they look like fingers, hence the name. Ditto to what
honeybee42 said about tourism and activities.

Yeah.....I don't think we should correct each other's very minor
grammatical errors.
Andi_3K. There's no need to feel humiliated. We all make
mistakes and most of us are fairly accepting of less than
perfect communication.

1. I do apologise. I had a weird nightmare/insomnia night and I
think I was so dazed I forgot I wasn't on my grammar board. So
sorry. :-[
2. you did actually type 'eat finger lakes' and I honestly
wondered what local delicacy those might be!

Based on the way my phone likes to “autocorrect” on my behalf,
I’m willing to bet OP was trying to type “near” the Finger
Lakes, not “eat” the Finger Lakes.
Either way, great resolution Andi, it sounds like a lovely, low
stress weekend!

Bopper, Andi has not returned to this site since the above
exchange, so unfortunately I don’t believe you’ll get a reply to
your comment/suggestion :-/

I am a professional grammar nerd--I get paid to correct the
grammar of articles that are going on the pages of national
consumer magazines and websites.
As a policy*, I do not correct people's grammar or word choices
or spelling online.
It's really unfriendly.
I have occasionally corrected someone's spelling or vocabulary
if I'm afraid they might need the correct spelling for a Google
search, or it might cause confusion. And even then, I'm very
careful about how I do it. I would never use "You surely meant."
I have made quips about autocorrect or spelling of words, etc.,
if the error maker has themselves opened that door. And even
then, I work hard to make the joke be about the language or the
humor, and not about the error.
*the exception: Reddit, where every now and then I will say, "In
case you find it useful, the proper term for that is X," because
that community is more open to it--and I am really careful about
keeping an informational tone.

Toots, I apologised for this, and agreed that I never should
have raised it, two months ago. I was and am really sorry. You
don't need to keep telling me why I was wrong: I know.
