In my husband's family, whenever anything went missing when he
was a child his parents said it had been taken by "higgeldy
piggeldy gremlins." Apparently, they took a lot of stuff.
I've lost plenty of stuff in my day that turned out to be easily
spotted by someone else, and I think in my case there is sort of
a selective blindness - as in I don't see what I'm looking for
because I don't expect it to be there. I've also had occasion
to put something down in a very stupid place and then couldn't
find it later in the place I had meant to put it. For me, it's
quite easy to forget when I've done something a million times
before exactly how it should be done and to zone out a little,
which is how the can opener ends up in the freezer instead of
the utensil drawer.

We always said it must be the Borrowers. My favorite book as a
child!
Mine, too! I always wished there were one more book in the
series!
I was fascinated by the notion of Borrowers living in the house.
I read those books over and over. I lived near the house that
was the setting for the 1970's movie so saw it all the time. I
got to go in once, because my Mom sold Avon to the owner's wife.
Wasn't nearly as exciting as I thought it would be.

We had a bread knife that went on holiday. I have a custom
fitted drawer where my kitchen knives are stored. DH and I do
low carb so there had not been a need for a bread knife for
several months. One day I went looking for it and it wasn't
there. DH & I searched through all of the knives, the utensil
drawer, the cabinet under the knife drawer, everywhere and it
was gone. I decided that I had either loaned it, taken it
somewhere and forgot it, or my nephew had borrowed it while he
was pet sitting for us. Five months later, it reappeared in the
spot that is dedicated to the bread knife. DH swears he did not
find and replace it.
Most recently it was some expensive think silicone hot pads my
DD gave me. Both went missing. Searched all through the kitchen.
A year later, I found them sitting in the drawer with the
hotpads. We did the
-Where did you find those?
-I didn't find them, they were just there. I thought you may
have bought new ones.

When I was a teenager my family went through a brief period when
our forks were disappearing. It was weird. Everyone denied
hiding them, of course, and to our best guess nobody was lying
about it. About three weeks (we had a lot of forks because four
children and two adults) after the first fork disappeared my
father went into the cabinet where our large stew pot was kept
(I think he was going to make a pot of bean soup or something, I
forget) and found every missing fork piled into that pot. We
were so spooked that no one made any jokes about it, which was
unusual for us. We were just glad the universe? poltergeist?
whoever or whatever put them someplace where we could get them
back.

Really weird. When things like this happen I just tell myself
it’s my imagination.

Many years ago, Series E savings bonds had a pretty good
interest rate, so I purchased a couple. For (literally) years,
they resided on the top shelf over the kitchen sink. One day DH
said, "You know, those could get lost. You ought to put them
someplace safer." So I did.
Years later, we move. A few years after that, DH passed away. I
went to the safe deposit box to get my copy of the will,
shuffled through the rest of the documents, and - no savings
bonds. No where. Not in the file cabinets at home either. I
thought - DH built in a hidden drawer in the bedroom. I couldn't
remember ever using it, and when we moved, it was stuck, and I
didn't bother forcing it open to look inside. I was sure, since
I looked everywhere else and had checked the safe deposit box
several more times, they had to be in our old house. I even
started tracking down if and how one could replace them. It was
enough money that I didn't want to just write it off as a loss.
One day I got a notice from the bank. It was eliminating the
safe deposit boxes from that location. I went down with a small
plastic shopping bag, shoved all the contents from the safe
deposit box into the bag, and went back to work. When I got
home, I started going through the loot and in the last envelope
I opened, two one-thousand dollar Series E savings bonds. I
could have sworn I had looked through every one of those
envelopes every time I accessed the box.

I loved “The Borrowers” too. I also always wanted a doll house
and never had one.
“The Borrowers” allowed me to make use of shoe boxes and bits
and pieces from around the house to make my own “Borrowers”
residence. My creativity was applauded in my family but I never
did get a real doll house.

I say get yourself a doll house right now. I always wanted one
as a child too, and when I turned 40 my husband built me one. I
had more fun decorating and furnishing it! Go for it! As they
say--you don't stop playing because you get old, you get old
because you stop playing.
