We have many different services coming to our street each week.
We get tired of them coming asking if we'd like tree trimming,
painting, power washing, a quote on new windows, gutter or roof
cleaning, irrigation system or landscaping. I've never found
that the service providers give a decent discount because
"they'll be in the area". I'd be fine if they left a flyer
saying something like they'll be on the street next week and
they'll give a 20% discount if you are interested. But I don't
expect my neighbors to reach out to me and say they plan to have
a tree trimmer next week.
[/quote]
Not too long ago, the "We're going to be in your neighborhood"
ploy was found to be just that. A ploy to drum up business.
Maybe not everywhere with every business, but enough that we
were right to be wary. I still am even though it's been several
years since I've seen anything like that.

Personally, if I was the neighbor and knew what you would be
asking the tree company to do and the (low) number of branches
you were talking about, I'd tell you to just bring them over the
day before they're coming to do the work. If the tree company
questioned it, I'd let them know it's in return for being able
to enter your property without difficulty. I really doubt it
would be an issue.
As for sharing the cost of the fence....I wouldn't. It's best
to have clear ownership on things like that. Attitudes can
change where the neighbor may not want you to think you have any
"interest" in the fence. Future owners of the properties may
have very different ideas.

I think the issue of paying for the fence is different by
situations. Every place we've lived, the fence was on the
property line and the cost of replacement was assumed to be
shared by each neighbor. We've probably had 6 to 8 experiences
with sharing the cost of fence replacement and never any issues.
Currently, we have our back portion and east side portion of the
fence replaced in the last year. Our neighbor to the left has
had some challenging times this year and asked if we were ok
holding off till next year to replace. Sense that side is mostly
hidden by our garage, we are fine with that. If he still can't
pay for it by end of next year, we'll probably just pay the full
cost.
I just can't imagine having a fence surrounding my property
where I don't have any say so in the repair or replacement.

Some people can be funny about money. If the workers give you a
discount, say $50 when they usually charge $75, the neighbors
may get upset that *their* bill didn't get a discount. You know
your neighbors so ask if you think they will be fine with it.
But it sounds like they may wish to keep finances separate.
Probably a good idea that you called the company as a brand new
job without bringing the neighbors into it.

I agree the fence issue is different by situation. Local
ordinances or neighborhood/HOA covenants sometime determine the
issue of who pays what, so it would be in OP's best interest to
know what those are before offering. As much as you can't
imagine having a fence surrounding your property where you don't
have any say, I can't imagine not being able to put up whatever
fence I want and can afford because the neighbors do have a say.

I live in a block of apartment buildings that are all the same.
We all have former gas fireplaces with marble surrounds; we all
have travertine walls in our lobby and terrazzo lobby floors and
stone steps in the stairwell.
We have a friend who had his own marble refinishing business. We
hired him to treat our stone floors and walls. And he sent his
info around to the other buildings on the block.
A few years later, he's a regular at the other buildings, but we
can't hire him; he's always busy.
He tells us in confidence that he won't work for us because our
board president and her best chum, who are the liaison on that,
are too unpleasant and demanding. He said, "I might charge you
guys a pain-in-the-ass fee on top, but I know that everyone on
the block will compare notes. And I don't want to lose other
customers because they think I'll charge them more, too. And I
don't want to have to argue with her about why I'm charging
more."

That’s pretty wild, Toots.
We moved to a new neighborhood and do collaborate with one
neighbor on things. We just let him know we are scheduling a
service and let him figure out the rest with the provider. (And
vice versa). We do compare notes about costs, but each deal
directly with the people doing the work. He wouldn’t bat an eye
at us asking someone already there(or scheduled) if they would
take our excess yard waste.

Well, I did bring the neighbor into it as I said something about
hiring them (the contractors) to remove my branches the same
time they are here to do the neighbors.
Anyways, I'm getting a free estimate from them this Tues.
It'll be interesting to ind out the quote. Two years ago, I had
a guy bring a wood chipper to take down and clear away two
spindly trees and a good sized branch. That was $500.
It occurs to me that if this doesn't work out, I could call that
guy. He could just come by when he's in the neighborhood and
cart them off in his pick up truck.
To be continued.

It's fine to ask neighbors who they hired. What I meant was some
people can be funny going in on it together, so it's best to
keep jobs separate.

Update
After the neighbor's contractor left (after giving his
estimate), I started thinking that he had high balled me ($300)
as he hadn't looked me in the eye when he gave me his quote plus
it was more than what I had been thinking ($200). I didn't want
to hire him feeling that he took advantage of me as that would
always bug me. So all this made me email, with pics, the tree
contractor I used 3 years ago.
She emailed me a quote of $185 and they would pick it up with in
2 weeks. I emailed back my agreement. Yea!
It's funny. I didn't want to make a mountain out of a molehill
for a simple job, but I ended up making a making a mountain
range out of a molehill.
It is probably best to keep this separate from my neighbor's
job, as Rose Red said. When I see neighbor again, I'll tell her
I hired "my guy" and thank her for inspiring me to get off my
duff.
