utilizing/sharing neighbor hiring tree cutters
By: Isisnin Date: April 24, 2021, 4:27 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
This is simple thing, but would appreciate and words of wisdom,
terminology suggestions, or stories os similar situations.
My neighbor let me know about a week ago that she has hired a
tree removal company to take down her 2 old trees that abut my
property. It'll be a couple more weeks before they come. No set
date. They will call a day or two ahead. There will be tree
debris coming down in my yard which they will clean up. I told
her they can use my yard as needed.
It hit me today that these contractors will probably bringing
something to haul away the tree trunks and limbs. Maybe a wood
chipper.
I'd like to ask my neighbor if I can chip in some for the wood
chipper/hauler if the contractor's agree for me to hire them to
handle a couple branches I have lying in my yard. I've been
cutting them up over a little time and am so tired of that. Just
want to get rid of them. Thinking this thru as I write this, I
also should get her permission to bring the branches over to her
property for chipping when the contractor's are there. It would
just be silly for them to bring the chipper over here.
FYI, all my branches are are fully trimmed down. 2 are 5' long
and 1' in diameter. About 6 are 1 and half ft long and 8" in
diameter.
Any thoughts/advice? Thank you

Go ahead and ask. The worst that can happen is that s/he can
say no. We do stuff like that in our neighborhood all the
time.

I think it would be fine to ask.

I would ask for the number of the tree service, explaining to
your neighbour that you have a few branches that you would like
them to chip up while they are there. Then call the service and
ask them if it can be done and how much it would cost. If they
say they'll do it for no extra charge since it is only a few
branches, at that point, I would offer neighbour some money,
since she would then essentially be paying them to clean up your
branches, even though it doesn't cost her any more than it would
have before.

Hi, I followed STiG's advice and asked, keeping it simple.
Neighbor emailed me back the name and number and I've left them
a message.
I wish we were the kind of neighborhood that teams up on stuff
like this. But for some reason, no. Also, oddly, contractors
don't seem to solicit work from nearby neighbors when they've
contracted with one neighbor. Neighbors could share the cost of
getting the equipment here.
My neighbor has a fence along our property line that she has
been thinking of replacing. I've been debating with myself about
offering to go halfies on it, but she is very OCD. so it's best
she owns it 100% then she can do whatever she wants with it. The
fence situation is probably why I'm cautious about this branch
situation.

What I would do, in this case, is price out the cost of the
fence you would be willing to put up. So if you're OK with
chain link or a basic wood fence, you would know the cost. Then
if neighbour approaches you, you can let her know that she's
free to build the fence however she likes (if you are OK with
that) and you are willing to give her X amount that is half of
what your basic fence was quoted.

I live in an apartment building, and the window repair folks we
spoke with would not deal with the windows as a building, but as
individual units. And they would not waive or
combine-for-a-discount the basic service fee. Which is annoying,
because the windows are technically building property, not
homeowner property.
A lot of service providers will want the profit of the basic
service fee and will insist on charging it per person or per
household.
HOWEVER: It would seem a bit silly for the tree folks to not
contact neighbors and offer the service while they're there, and
still charge the basic service fee. Then it becomes pure profit,
because they don't the expense of bringing the machines, but
they get paid for it.
Maybe they can't leave the machines overnight anyway, so it
doesn't work out that way. Or their schedule is such that they
don't have time to stay in the neighborhood, because someone
else has booked them across town for the next day.
But I'd sure want to advertise my services while all the
neighbors were thinking of it! Mail a postcard to every house in
an 8-block radius and advertise.
Even if I can't do the work in the same timeframe, at least I've
gotten the customers to think about my company.

Yeah, this is exactly what I'm thinking. For some reason, $200
hundred dollars is rattling in my head - That's how much I want
to get rid of them. And bring the wood to the chipper myself.
Why would't they want an extra $200 on top of what the
neighbor's paying? I left a message for the contractor and
haven't heard back. If I don't hear back in a couple days, I'll
try them again.

That's good idea! I really wouldn't be comfortable enjoying the
fence and not contributing to the cost. Thank you.

We have many different services coming to our street each week.
We get tired of them coming asking if we'd like tree trimming,
painting, power washing, a quote on new windows, gutter or roof
cleaning, irrigation system or landscaping. I've never found
that the service providers give a decent discount because
"they'll be in the area". I'd be fine if they left a flyer
saying something like they'll be on the street next week and
they'll give a 20% discount if you are interested. But I don't
expect my neighbors to reach out to me and say they plan to have
a tree trimmer next week.
