In situations where you might feel like "Geez, why can't I say
that joke without people taking offense?", a better question to
ask yourself is "Why do I feel I absolutely have to say it ?
What does it take away from my life if I refrain from using it
or phrase it differently ?" Like it would probably be funny if
you posted on FB "I just got banned from A Pea In The Pod when
they found out I was only a chubby gal. Rude!" You could also
change your profile to say "10 years overdue with a burrito baby
from Chipotle." But where it gets dicey is when you put your
immediate circle in situations where they temporarily feel
emotionally invested ("oh, I thought I was gonna be a grandma")
or intentionally forgotten ("I just told her last week I cry
looking at maternity clothes, due to infertility. How did she
forget ?")
Exactly. And I've seen this on facebook in different iterations.
Pregnancy, divorce, new job, etc. It always starts like this:
"We're pregnant and so happy! [Cue paragraphs of waxing poetic
here]"
...ha! April Fools!
(and usually the message at the bottom isnt just April fools,
but its worded to mean "Omg you are so freaking gullible and i
am so amazing for pulling off this prank. hehehe hahaha!" with
an undertone of "y'all are stupid"
Despite not being a fan of these bait and switch kind of jokes,
I have never felt that someone thought I was stupid for
believing them. <shrug>
