       "Pregnancy" Jokes
By: DaDancingPsych Date: March 31, 2021, 7:49 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I do not mean to be insensitive, so I hope that my question is
       not.
A friend posted a meme on Facebook that gave a statistic about
pregnancy struggles and miscarriages and then said "Pregnancy is
not an April Fool's Joke." On one hand, I can see why seeing
someone making a joke about something that you so desperately
want may not be funny and may even stir up some hurt emotions.
On the other hand, can we not discuss pregnancy in a humorous
       manner?
I'm not big on April Fool's Day jokes. I don't find most of them
to be funny, so I don't really participate. However, I recently
had an incident that make me wonder if I need to check myself. I
like the way maturity clothes fit me. They tend to be longer and
more forgiving in the mid-section, so I have made jokes about
shopping in that department. (It's funny, because anyone who
knows me knows that I'm not in a place and never will be in a
place to want to be a mother.) Should I not be making jokes
about my own "pregnancy"? Am I being rude or insensitive?

I know many years ago (just before and during my pregnancy with
my second child who is nearly 23--end of next month), I worked
in a maternity store and we had a number of customers who were
purchasing for themselves who were well beyond pregnancy being
possible (barring Biblical sorts of interventions as with
Abraham and Sarah) because they found the pants more
comfortable. So I don't see anything wrong with that.
(Of course, I don't really like pranks at all, so I despise
April Fool jokes in general, but I don't think they're meaning
talking about purchasing maternity clothing because it fits
better, but more of a fake pregnancy announcement to get a
reaction and pull the rug out with "just a joke" ... but I could
       be wrong about that.)

We've all been inside a uterus. We're all going to die. If we
can't joke about either of those things, what can we joke about?

To be clear, I don't think me purchasing maternity clothes is a
problem, although thank you for sharing that I'm not a complete
oddball! I am wondering if me joking about it IS a problem. For
example, I have said things like "I bought this in the maturity
department because I have enough behind for two."

Yep, you can either laugh or cry. I choose laugh. Bring it on!

That meme and others like it came out a few years ago to address
a specific type of April Fool's joke that was going around.
The joke was telling someone (life partner, parents, siblings,
friends) you were pregnant so you could record their reaction
and post it. Or, one would lead up to a big revelation with
someone who may be hoping for a pregnancy announcement only to
reveal they got a new couch or something.

If the goal is to never offend anyone, don't make jokes. I would
imagine many people would not be offended, and some people would
be offended....but some people are offended by seemingly
       anything and everything.

I don't have a lot of admiration for the "I'm pregnant! April
       Fool's!" joke.
       It's VERY low-effort.
But I think if someone does that joke, it doesn't have anything
to do with people who are miscarrying or unable to conceive.

       This.
I lost my mom and dad at an early age. I hated hearing jokes
about overbearing mom's when planning weddings or interfering
with child raising or being an irritating MIL. But can you
imagine a world where we other's felt they couldn't make jokes
about any of those things because a few of us didn't get to
       experience it.
We all have some type of sadness in our lives that can through
no fault of our own. But we shouldn't wallow in it so much that
we force our sadness on to others and try to control their
       actions.

I guess that's where I don't understand the meme. If my life
partner and I were trying to conceive a child and I made a fake
announcement to them, that's terrible. But if you know that your
intended audience would laugh, then I don't see the rudeness.
And I really struggle how that is rude to other people trying
conceive who might see the video... but that's why I'm posting
       the question.
