We Don't Sell That

I got this after a call from my cousin who I'll call Molly. She
asked me to post to see if she was rude or not.
Molly is a manager at a local candy store. As you can imagine,
they are very busy this time of year. One of the things they
make are custom Easter baskets that are wrapped in cellophane
and tied with ribbon. They have large rolls of the wrapping
items at the back of the store.
A woman came in today and asked for some of the cellophane and
ribbon. Molly asked if she wanted to order a basket. No, she
wanted the cellophane and ribbon so she could wrap her own
basket at home.
Molly said "I'm sorry, we don't sell these items but there is a
card store right next door and I'm sure they have something
similar with their gift wrap".
Woman insisted that Molly give her the cello and ribbon. Again,
Molly explained that they didn't sell the wrapping because it
was provided by the candy company to wrap custom gift baskets.
Woman insisted again. Finally, Molly said "Miss, I have no way
of charging you for this. We don't sell it. It is for our
custom baskets to be wrapped. I wouldn't have any idea how much
to even charge you since we don't have a bar code for this. I
recommend you go to the card store.".
Woman huffed off with "Well, you don't have to be so rude".
I told Molly she was not the rude one.

Not rude at all. The woman was rude to continue to insist.

I've seen stories like this on a lot of different websites.
Entitled customers throw out the word "rude" and "poor customer
service" when their unreasonable demands are denied.
They've learned to push and push because in the past, an
employee or a manager gives in just to get rid of them. When it
doesn't work, it's because the workers are "rude."
They are always the rude ones, not the employees. If course they
won't see it that way.

What is rude is when someone tells you two times that they
aren't able to do something, and you continue badgering them.
This hits home to me because I have a relative who doesn't take
no for an answer. There are limits to how much time and energy
you should have to waste telling a person the same thing.

Molly was fine. The only thing I might have done differently is
just repeat her original statement over and over, ad nauseum.
(It's a big *might* - I do not have the temperment to work
retail, as I have a very hard time making my face match my
words. I agree with the statement that everyone should work
retail at least once in their life to give them the ability to
respect retail workers.)

Not only do I agree that Molly was not rude, it sounds as if the
woman wanted Molly to GIVE her the wrapping supplies. Which if
true, doubles the woman's rude sense of entitlement for me.

That woman didn't want to buy the cellophane or ribbon. If she
did, she would have gone to the card store in the first place.
Most card stores have some rolls of cellophane and I'm sure just
about ALL of them have ribbon of some sort. She had a lot of
nerve to go to a place that SELLS what she wants to make herself
and want free supplies. Still nervy even if she wanted to pay
for said supplies.
I'm sick of entitled people that accuse someone of the very
thing the entitled person is doing to the accused!
Woman insisted that Molly give her the cello and
ribbon.
When I got to that sentence I honestly thought ‘Whoa!- where did
a large stringed musical instrument come into this story?’ and
had to go back and read again till I could make sense of it. Is
‘cello’ a normal abbreviation of ‘cellophane’ where you live*?
Because I’ve never heard it this side of the Pond.
* And where is that, roughly? It would be really helpful if you
put something in the ‘Location’ field of your Profile Summary,
which will appear below your name whenever you post, so you
don’t have to mention it every time you say something like
‘people round here say/do X’. It can be as vague as you like -
you don’t need to put anything that might identify you. Even the
country you live in is helpful, given that this is a truly
international board with members in at least four continents.

I never heard of cello being a shortened version of cellophane.
However, when I write a long word several times I sometimes
abbreviate it to the first few letters hoping/thinking that the
reader would understand.
I didn't see cello as the musical instrument, my mind filled in
the rest of the word so I understood what OP was talking about.

Molly was not the rude one. I'm betting the customer wanted her
to give them the stuff for free.
