Thank you for this, but I don't want you to do that

I'll try and keep this brief.
My hair is bright blue - bleached white and then with blue toner
applied. The full job is done at a salon, but DH has been
helping me refresh the blue in between, since the gaps between
       appointments are dependent on lockdowns.
I have an appointment for the next bleach-and-dye in April,
lockdown permitting (UK) and DH has agreed to freshen up the
blue this weekend, but has been badgering me for some time to
let him bleach my parting as well. He has some left over
       peroxide from bleaching his trainers.
I have said no, I have said hell no, and he still keeps asking.
How do you politely convince someone you're not going to let
them make a terrible job of your hair without rejecting what he
       is actually good at?

No matter how good my SO is at touching up my hair color, I’d
get up on my hind legs at the thought of putting the same
chemical he uses on his shoes on my scalp. I’m sure there are
different strengths of peroxide and what works on athletic shoes
won’t be good on delicate human skin.
the most you can do is gently remind him that it’s often best to
stay with what you know. Warmer weather is coming. It won’t be
possible to cover up terrible mistakes with a hat.

Just tell him you do not know the types of chemicals that the
salon uses to bleach your hair and do not want to put peroxide
on it that could conflict with the chemicals normally used. You
can also state that though many salon products use peroxide in
them, they are formulated with a specific strength and neither
of you have that knowledge. Using too much can create a
significant harm to your hair and given that he is talking about
the roots, it's not like you can trim it off in a couple of
weeks. Using the wrong strength can end up with orange hair that
will cost you a fortune to correct. And who knows what color
you'd end up with if he gets the peroxide on the part of your
hair that is already tinted blue.
Suggest that if he is really interested in learning to bleach
hair safely, he can start on his and once he has mastered the
ability, you'd be happy to have him try out on you. ;)

       Ask him the following questions:
Do you know what concentration of peroxide is safe to use on
       human hair?
Do you know how long to keep it on?
How would you feel if I get a chemical burn on my scalp because
the peroxide concentration was too high or left on too long?

Thanks, everyone. I'll give these a try. Trust me, considering
how much care my colourist takes in getting it right (my hair is
quite dark, so it takes a long time to bleach it white) I don't
       fancy him attempting it.

Yikes, no. He will cause a hot mess. Professionals beg people
not to DIY bleach, because even they can get it wrong, and an
amateur with a bottle of peroxide and the overconfidence that
comes from watching three Youtube tutorials and thinking he
knows what he's doing is a recipe for disaster.
Tell him your colorist will have a nervous breakdown if you let
him near your head with peroxide.

I did mention this to my colourist last time I was there and her
head nearly fell off. She was polite, but pointed out that it
would be a nightmare fixing any mistakes.
The blue toner I bought is slightly darker than my usual colour
so the roots won't be as obvious while I wait. I'd rather that
       than ruin my hair.

Do you remember back when Jennifer Lawrence got her hair cut
really, really short after filming The Hunger Games?
Her director--a man--insisted that all the hair changes had to
be done to her real hair, and by the time he got done with it,
       her hair was totally trashed.
       Apparently he was really surprised!

[quote]“At first I didn’t realize it was messed up,” the
filmmaker said. “I thought she was cutting it just to wear wigs
to make me mad, but it wasn’t the case. We actually fried her
hair, which is sad. I feel bad.”

Most guys just simply don't pay any attention to this sort of
consequence. They aren't steeped in the same set of information
       and context.
And some of them (ahem) are not willing to admit that perhaps
they are out of their element and ignorant on a subject.

Now that I can believe. DH's hair is a basic buzz cut that I can
do for him - much simpler.
We've now freshened up the blue but did not attempt bleach -
luckily it didn't come up again.

Tell him that you talked to your stylist, and she said,
       "Absolutely not."
