How long does mom feed them for til they are on regular diet?
When their eyes open at 14 days they start exploring & chewing
on everything. We leave a bowl of food in the cage 24/7 which
has everything they need and feed extras occasionally, tonight
they're going to have a corn cob put in the cage, this will be
fun as corn is like crack for rats :D
They start eating when their eyes open, & using the water bottle
when they can reach it, mum is spending longer out of the cage
3-4 hours at a time. I would say they are weaned now, they just
feed off mum because they can. We will separate the sexes at 5
&1/2 weeks as they will be able to get pregnant not long after
that. The 6 girls will move into the adult girls cage then so
will still feed off mum even though they don't need to. They
will also learn how to be rats by hanging out with adult rats.
The 10 boys will stay in the maternity cage & will also spend
time with the older boys.
Edit: Because there were so many, they were weaned & mum was
over it we ended up separating them at 4.5 weeks. The boys we
decided to keep moved in with the adult boys, the girls with the
adult girls & the remaining 6 boys stayed in the maternity cage.
We put in more things to do & added a wheel, which was not safe
to have in there with mum. I would put mum with them in the
outside cage play area so they could still feed off her for the
last week. Dad & uncle Savini would alternate days in the cage
with them so they would have an adult to look up to, grandad
would come out for short bursts of play time with them.

I love their little house!
Thank you. It's a great little house, the bottom is open for
easy access to any stubborn rats who don't want to go back lol.
We bought that and a cradle from a local lady who makes stuff
for Chinchilla's. I think there are currently about 8 snuggled
up in the cradle.

Re: 10 day old Rittens! ~ 11 weeks old now.

Sorry for the slow update. Here are the four boys we kept. Miro
is in the hammock with grandad Aleister ~ from left to right is
Bullet, Marko Runt & Taco.
Heartbreakingly 6 days ago we had to put Aleister to sleep. He
was two & a half, had a great life and a huge impact on ours.
There was an initial worry that the little ones moving in with
him & his sons would be too much for him but he never showed it.
They moved in at four & a half weeks old, he absolutely adored
them! Even on his last morning he was grooming them & letting
them groom him. They actually spent more time saying goodbye to
his body than Nacho & Savini.
On a happier note, all except for Marko are over 300g now.
Sometimes I catch a glimpse at Miro and think it's his mum.
Their brothers and sisters are all in their forever homes & we
hope that they have long, happy, spoiled lives.
