It does sound as though Employee was simply in denial about how
low down the totem pole her job actually was. Or, if she did
know, had convinced herself that even in this menial post her
genius would so shine out that she had only to say ‘My way is
better’ and Management would fall on its knees, kowtow to her,
and cry ‘All hail, Employee! You have shown us the Light! We’ll
       rewrite our company policy!’

I trained a guy who just didn't want to do things the way he was
instructed to. And we were always open to better ways, but he
just wouldn't listen when I would explain why we were doing
things they way we did and why his way wouldn't work. After he
was let go (while I was on vacation, I got an email from my VP
that he was gone), I was looking for information on his computer
and found these huge spreadsheets that would have taken tons of
time (full of graphs and macros), tracking information that we
had told him he didn't need to track (and why). Such a waste of
       time.

That sounds really possible. I've met people like that.

[quote]Friend was a little shorthanded for a day or two, but
said that was easier than having the employee there.

All bosses and managers need to remember this.
It's part of what makes really GOOD employees so good, so keep
your eyes open to the people whose work makes the day much
       easier when they're in.
But don't be afraid to lose people who make your job actually
       harder.
(This also reminds me of the stories of women who divorce their
husbands and realize that their daily lives are suddenly so much
easier--they have only 3 children to deal with instead of 4. Can
you imagine how humilating that is, to be the kind of spouse who
makes their SO's life easier when they're gone?)

I can imagine being the ex of that kind of spouse. My ex,
however, does not realize he was that kind of spouse. That is
       part of the problem.

My sister is currently dealing with someone like this, someone
who thinks that rules are for others. My sister is a Lending
Officer for a credit union. The assistant manager for one of the
branches has become a thorn in her side, demanding that my
sister drop everything and push through the AM's loan
applications, ignore documentation requirements, put the AM's
customers at the front of the line, etc. Last week, my sister
also noticed that some of these applications were a little
shaky. For example, my sister told one applicant that there was
a one time $16 application fee. "What?" he exploded. "I'm not
paying for this. Cancel it right now." And there was another
application for a refinance, which my sister looked at and
realized that the customer would end up paying more in the long
run. When my sister gently pointed out that this would cost the
customer $300 more over the term of the loan, that applicant was
       very angry.
My sister has tried addressing this with the AM, who shuts her
down, and "Just handle the application!" My sister has forwarded
everything to the head of lending, who plans to take decisive
action. They wonder if AM is just looking for credit on number
of loans submitted, not knowing or not caring that she is
antagonizing existing customers, and potentially harming the
credit union. The AM's direct manager doesn't want to get
involved, and this may result in some professional Darwinism.

The employee did your friend a big favor by quitting and saving
your friend all the rigmarole of firing her.
I have to admit, I'm very curious as to what the actual task is
that "taping lids on teapots" represents. ;D

Yeah, they would absolutely NOT be humiliated. But they should
be. They ARE humiliated in the eyes of their former wives.
