       New Year’s Nuttiness
By: Lilipons Date: December 30, 2020, 5:00 pm

I don’t think I’ve posted it here but I certainly did on the old
       E-Hell.
For some reason I have never been able to discover, we have
gotten properly addressed mail for people who never could have
lived in our apartment. We moved in on the day after the gut
renovation was approved by the city for occupancy and we have
never lived anywhere else. At one time we were receiving mail
for 25 people who were said to be living on our two bedroom
       apartment.
Today we received a Holiday card for a 26th family. Their whole
address was on the envelope and we did not open the piece of
mail. I would like to send them a note card wishing them a
Happy New Year and telling them that the family they were
greeting does not and has never lived at this address.
What do the good folks here think?

I think informing them that they have the wrong address would be
an act of kindness. I know that I would appreciate the gesture.

Can't you just write "not at this address" on the front of the
envelope and send it back to the post office?
That seems really strange, 25 names. If the building was a
renovation, is it possible that people have horribly out of date
       address books?
At least eight years, maybe more, after I moved into my house, I
was receiving mail for the former owner. Unfortunately, "not at
this address/return to sender" did no good. The former owner was
a federal government employee, and one of the insurance plans
available to federal employees at the time was the worst
offender at not updating their records.

Many businesses cannot change an address in their records unless
it is provided in writing by the individual (or their legal
       representative).
They include but are not limited to:
       Employers
       Banks/financial institutions
       Insurance carriers
       Governmental agencies

Are the letters addressed to your specific apartment number? The
strange and creepy part is letters addressed to 26 different
       names (so far!)
I would expect maybe a handful, but 26?!

Yes, all the mail has carried our complete address. Zip code,
street address and apt. No are all perfect. None of the mail
has been important. Mostly, it’s been catalogs and
       solicitations for donations.
The odd part is that none of these people could ever have lived
in our apartment because that apartment number didn’t exist
before the renovation. Before this building was reworked for
residential use, it was zoned for light industry. There were no
large lofts where people could live. It was all small machine
       shops.
BTW, the journalist Pete Hamill’s father worked in this building
       when Pete was a child.

My best guess would be that someone lived/lives at a similar
address, at some point a typo was made to your address, and the
addressee's name (with the incorrect address) is on a list that
       has been sold multiple times.

My best guess is that your address is so common that it's often
used as an example on forms.
You don't happen to live at 123 Main Street, Anytown, Anystate,
       do you? ;D

That would make sense if we were the Smiths who lived in Apt. 4D
at 200 Main St. We aren’t.
The numbering system of our apartments looks strange if you
don’t know the odd layout of the place. It’s rare that our
apartment number isn’t questioned when we fill out forms when
going to a new doctor or dentist. Even the Board of Elections
       had to be corrected.
