       Last Minute Nonsense
       By: Venus193 Date: December 23, 2020, 9:55 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I haven't seen my ex since just before Covid. He called me last
week to invite me over for tomorrow and asked if I could bring
the salad and my preferred dressing. I said "No problem."
Early this afternoon I was on my way home from the store and he
called to say he just got a delivery of salad and asked me to
       bring some baguette bread instead.
This is the second time this has happened to me in a month.
When the Potluck Queen invited me for Thanksgiving she said she
would buy the turkey breast and a ham. I said I would bring the
gravy and cranberry sauce, which provoked a question mark. I
bought the gravy (canned, jarred, and dry mix, so
non-perishable) and the day before said she didn't need any.
Is there a good way to prevent this from happening again?

I agree. Stop solving the problem for these people. "Sorry, I
       already bought everything for XYZ."

This is why, when I do a meal involving a lot of people, I
prefer to just provide all the food myself. Involving other
people just complicates things. I don't even care about the cost
       anymore.

This! I can't even deal with people that OFFER to bring their
"special" dish, so it gets worked into the menu, but then it
doesn't appear, because they didn't "have time". Don't offer,
       then!

This! It also avoids the scenario where a guest shows up with
ingredients and wants to make their contribution in your
       kitchen.

The Thanksgiving hostess doesn't cook and knows very little
about cooking. She may not have realized that the purchase she
made would include gravy, stuffing, and mash. When I got to her
place she heate the oven, put the cooked turkey breasts in oven
pans, and asked me if she should put the gravy in with them. I
told her No, as it would dry out, and added a little water to
each. The gravy was heated on top of the stove.

Thanksgiving dinner would be tough on someone who doesn't
normally cook. Even with the premade Thanksgiving dinners that
some grocery stores sell, you have to figure out the best way to
heat everything, so that everything is ready at the same time.

And to that, I would add, "I can bring it, or not, your choice.
But I won't be able to bring the [other thing] you requested."
