The Christmas conundrum.

Our upstairs neighbors have two boys who love to rough-house.
It does get noisy sometimes but we’re early risers and are both
caffeinated and fed before they start.
Today, their parents left us a nice note and a bottle of wine in
front of our door. The note thanked us for being ‘such
wonderful neighbors’.
We aren’t. We just don’t find any reason to complain when
children play in a reasonable way in their own home.
Should we reciprocate? If so, how?
Certainly, a TY note for the gift is in order but I think a bit
more should be given. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve but I can still
get a crate of clementines. It won’t be expensive and I think
it would be a nice TY gift and a sweet offering for the New Year
that the whole family can enjoy.
Any other ideas out there?

Lovely idea and (as I’m sure you know) citrus is so synonymous
with the holiday season it’s especially apt.

Fruit or other treats are fine. A note of thanks and holiday
greetings is sufficient. You don't have to say they are
"wonderful neighbors" back ;)

Thanks to all who responded.
Clementines and a bag of Quadratini in a nice basket I just
happen to have will be presented outside their door around noon
tomorrow with best wishes for a ‘sweet and fruitful’ 2021.

But you are wonderful neighbours! You realize that a family
with two young boys is going to be louder than a single person
who wears nothing but slippers around the apartment and you
don't complain about it! There are many others who would.
I think the clementines are a perfect gift. What is Quadratini?

I agree, you ARE a wonderful neighbor. Sure, their family is
doing nothing wrong, but that doesn't take away from the fact
that they make noise that can (and likely is) disruptive
sometimes. Imagine if you were constantly asking them to be more
careful about the noise levels. If done properly, I would not
find your request inappropriate, but it could really stress this
family out. The parents would be constantly yelling/punishing
these boys for acting like... well... kids! But instead you
simply let it roll off of you. The family is obviously aware of
how annoying that they can be and want to express their
gratefulness. They appreciate you and it sounds well deserved!!!
Either way, your kind gesture sounds perfect! I am sure that
they will appreciate it!

Quadratini are bite-size wafer cookies. They’re layered with
flavored cream to form little blocks and come in over a dozen
different flavors. Some of the best flavors (in my view) are
the dark chocolate, the cappuccino and the tiramisu. They only
cost about 4$ a bag and most groceries around here stock them.

They are wonderful with coffee, tea or a glass of cold milk.
However, Quadratini are a bit rich and hot chocolate might be a
little too lush.
