End of Year School Concert with a 'Coronavirus' Theme?
By: LifeOnPluto Date: December 11, 2020, 10:57 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Background: I'm in Australia, where the school year runs from
February to December. Because nearly all of Australia is
relatively free of the coronavirus, many schools are still
       having end of year concerts.
One of my friends recently told me that the primary school which
her kids attend held an end of year concert - with a coronavirus
theme! Instead of the usual Christmas themed songs, the teachers
/ organisers made the children all sing parody-type songs about
COVID-19. For example, one of the songs was "Stayin' Inside" to
the tune of "Stayin' Alive" by The Bee Gees.
My friend personally thought this was in rather bad taste. While
Australia has largely been unscathed by the coronavirus, we've
still had over 900 deaths, and many more people have caught it.
Not to mention all the people who have lost their jobs, or small
businesses which have had to close, etc. Or the people
interstate who haven't seen their families for nearly a year,
due to various states closing their borders.
It seems opinions were mixed among the parents. Many agreed with
my friend that the concert was in poor taste, but others thought
it was a great way to "help the kids process it all". I guess us
Aussies have been known for our 'quirky' and irreverent humour,
so maybe there's an element of that?
What do you guys think of such a concert? Tacky? Hilarious?
       Somewhere in between?

As a person who lives in America I am horrified. If they had
done it here they would have been yelled at. There have been
over 250,000 deaths, many businesses have closed etc. It is in
bad taste and a slap in the face to those that have died.
Basically 'Oh you lost your family member but look at these
       parody songs hehehehe"
And the fact that they are using it as a way for a child to
"process this" Sickens me to no end. Guess what? Children are
hella smart. You can sit them down and explain in terms they
will understand about it. IE "There is a really bad sickness
going around. Its called the Coronavirus but also called
Covid-19. If you get it, it might be really bad, so that is why
we have to wear these masks and stay six feet apart.' etc etc.
So yeah. My vote isnt even tacky. My vote is tone-deaf and
       awful.

My mother's family and DH's family lived through the Blitz, in
which around 43,000 civilians were killed. Making up parody
songs about about sitting around in inadequate air raid shelters
waiting for the doodlebugs to fall is exactly the attitude that
got them all through their ordeal, and helped them 'process the
experience' (not that the phrase existed at the time). I am
thoroughly encouraged to hear that an Aussie school is taking
       the same approach.
Nikko-chan, I honestly think you've missed the whole point. The
school didn't encourage the children to sing this song to
explain anything to them. It didn't need explaining; of course
the children knew all about it. They did so to encourage the
children to treat the situation with communal, cheerful,
       'we'll-get-through-this-thing!' defiance, rather than lonely
dread and misery. Well done them, say I.

I've seen a spoof ad for 'Now thats what I call a corona
christmas' with parady versions of all the popular christmas
songs I loved it, found it hysterical (and have lost a family
       member to covid)
I'm in the UK and aside from the fact that all the christmas
concerts have been banned at the moment and it's not the end of
the school year it wouldn't surprise me if the kids school
didn't do one themselves if year 6 have a leaving assembly (my
son's did a parody of Let It Go)

That kind of... grim humour is very typical of British
(descended) folks, I think. So while I think it wasn't perhaps
the best choice of an end of year concert, I think it may have
been fun for those involved. Especially those writing the
       parodies.
But I can also see people being massively unhappy with that type
       of performance.

It depends on the words of the songs. There are funny parodies
on YouTube about staying at home, pajamas, banana bread, hand
sanitizer, 6 feet apart, working from home, zoom, etc. Jimmy
Fallon just came out with "2020 the musical" which I found
       amusing.
I wouldn't want to hear parodies about the death count and
       things like that though.

I am rather torn and can see both sides of it. On one hand, the
virus has done great damage to many people and this comedy may
be insensitive to their experiences. On the other, we need to
find the joy in life and if silly songs does that for some
people, then I suppose that's a good thing. I am not typically a
big fan of parody songs, so I would likely find the concert
       rather bland for that reason.
However, if someone from the school asked my opinion as to
whether or not they should do it, I think I would have foreseen
the mixed results. For a children's concert, I would have
suggested that they play it safe and find a different theme to
       go with.
I also agree that the song content would be a huge factor. A
song like "Stayin' Inside" might be a fun way to remind children
of the importance of doing their part. A song laughing at the
deaths would not be funny and wildly inappropriate for children.

I'm also of two minds on this. I'd have to see the lyrics to
really make the call. DH and I make up parodies all the time. We
just made up one about a thing we're in with the neighbor to the
tune of King of Pain. It's part of our process and I could see
how it would be part of someone else's. I also realize that my
humor isn't everyone's cup of delight so this could be a
situation where I'd be the one saying, "We should do this!" and
writing the songs with the kids and I'd need someone to check my
thinking... and my humor. (This is one more example of why one
shouldn't surround oneself with "yes men." Perspective is so
       important.)
If comedy = tragedy + time, Oz may have covid sufficiently in
the rearview mirror that this can be done in a funny and
appropriate manner. (DH and I are making up covid parodies, but
I'd never share our lyrics. Our state is a mess.)

Thank you, iolaus! I went and googled that, and in those
two-and-a-half minutes I laughed out loud more often than I've
done in the last month. How I wish whoever created that would
actually write all the songs and make a CD. I'd buy it whatever
       the cost.
For all Brimstoners who can take mild gallows humour, it's here:

This is my favorite. It's a take off on "Be Our Guest" from
Beauty and the Beast. There are a couple of 'bad words' in
       there but they're sneakily done.
