       Question on fabric adhesives
By: Snowfire Date: November 29, 2020, 3:19 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I'm looking for suggestions on which kind of adhesive to use for
       a project.
Some years ago I made a framed shadowbox for DH with a picture
of his Dad in uniform and his medals and rank and unit badges.
It is all mounted on a board covered with velvet. The medals
were easy because they pinned on. The patches were a bit more
challenging. I had them attached with sticky back velcro and
that seemed to be working for a while. Recently they have been
falling off and the sticky stuff on the velcro seems to be dried
out. I want to re-attach them but I don't want to do anything
which could leak through the badges and stain or damage them.
I was hoping some of you crafty types would have some
suggestions for me! Hot glue or ???

If the problem is dried out 'sticky' and it has been many years
perhaps you should attach more sticky back velcro again.
I like Aileens craft glue but suggest you test it on a sample
       piece of velvet.
Is it possible for someone to put a few invisible stitches on
the edges of the patches to attach them?

I was also going to suggest you baste them on. I think that
would be far less damaging than any kind of adhesive.
A nice sharp needle ought to slide through without much damage.
Just make a tacking stitch or two at each corner, leaving long
tails at beginning and end, and then tie the two tails at the
       back.
(make your first stitch from the front to the back piercing the
inside of the patch, then back up just outside the patch, then
back down through the first hole if you can find it. Take that
tail that's on the front, thread it through a needle, and stitch
through the fabric just outside the patch. Then tie the ends
       together on the back)
People often forget hand-sewing, but it's far gentler on fabric
       that you think.
