       New adventure
       By: honeybee42 Date: November 3, 2020, 1:55 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Well .. as if the 5+1 cats living in my house weren't enough, I
have taken on a new project--a small TNR project with the cats
outside that my neighbors and I feed. Unfortunately, the
neighbors in question are on disability and so not able to
financially contribute to the project (I do have a gofundme, but
haven't received much .. anything helps though).
I currently have the two surviving kittens who were born this
year in my bathroom. They're best buddies and I have Jemmy
scheduled for tomorrow and Leo's neuter comes the following
week. I'm going to be talking to my vet about the possibility
of finding an indoor home for these two because even if saved
from the prospect of fighting/injuries/contributing to kitten
overpopulation, they deserve a better life than that. I'll have
to take a break to build up some funds for the females (my vet
will not spay without also vaccinating) who may/may not be in
heat at the time (costs more if they are).
There had been nine kittens (that I know of) born this year, and
only two survivors (which is part of what spurred me to take
       this project on *now*)
Attaching a picture of my "boarders". I emptied out the cabinet
under the sink and put in some old towels that I don't use for
anything but mopping up really big messes, gave the food/water
       and a litterbox.

I don't know where you live, but where I'm at you can apply for
a tnr colony with the county. We have an agreement with them and
animal control to TNR and the county pays all of the cost to
vaccinate and spay/neuter them as long as there's someone who
       will be responsible for them.
It would be a good idea to see if there is a similar program in
       your area.

I did look into that before I started--there isn't anything
(yet) in my county. The closest is 25 miles away in another
county (and their services are limited to that county). At
least I'm getting on this neighborhood colony early, so it isn't
       very big.

Now they're under my bathroom sink. Jemmy had surgery on the
4th, Leo will on the 11th.

Socialization is coming along--Leo is very happy to be picked up
and snuggled. Jemmy, not so much, although he is starting to
allow himself to be pet more often and he isn't running to hide
when I head in (mostly to feed them or attend to the litterbox,
although it is also my bathroom). I've picked up a few toys,
       too.

Leo was running a fever on original surgery day, so he couldn't
have the surgery. We've rescheduled his neuter and I have some
antibiotics for both him and Jemmy (because the chances of them
sharing the URI is very high, and Jemmy had just been in the
week before). Did get the flea, ear mite and worms treatments
for Leo so now they've both been treated for fleas and ear mites
and the first dose of the wormer (second dose is to be given two
weeks after the first). Fortunately, the medicine is liquid and
not pill form (pilling two cats twice a day would be awful ...
the liquid isn't easy, but I've got the technique down.
Both Jemmy and Leo are becoming well-accustomed to human
interaction/affection. Now if they'll just get healthy and stay
that way for Leo's re-scheduled neuter.

As an update ... We now have foster failure. Leo and Jemmy are
       staying with me.
Today, I was able to catch Lady Jane (a gray tabby) and my vet
was able to get her spay in. She's now in a cage in my utility
room to recover before being released back outside (I'm planning
to release Saturday morning unless she's showing too much
evidence of distress in the cage. Three days is the minimum,
five is better because she is TNR (with absorbable stitches so I
don't have to try to re-corral her for a stitches removal
appointment). I will see if I'm able to get a decent picture of
       her tomorrow.
Here is the Boys' Club on my bed--Domino (my only other male
       cat) with Jemmy and Leo.

That looks like a foster success to me! You were only keeping
them until they found their forever home---and now they have!
They look quite comfy and at home. Are they still a bit shy or
       did they relax a bit?

Jemmy is still fairly shy (I'm the only person he's warmed up
to, and even I can still startle him into running under the bed
       if I move too quickly, like if I need to head into the bathroom;
he's still diving for cover when my son who lives here or my son
who lives across the street but still does laundry here take
notice of him). Leo acts like he's lived inside all his life
(instead of having been born under my forsythia and living
outside for the first 6 months of his life, and he's not even a
year old yet). That's fairly common with feral-start cats, that
one is much more "tame" and others are not tamable at all (not
Jemmy) or very slow to warm up (Jemmy). But I don't care--Jemmy
is still going to get the proper vet care all his life, food at
regular times in his very own food dish, won't be getting into
fights, won't be getting wet when it rains or cold during the
winter. Jemmy also will get snuggly at night, so I have hope
that he will eventually be the same way when there's daylight.

Here is Lady Jane, thoroughly hating her "imprisonment" in the
recovery room (which is in my utility room). She needs to be
kept indoors for a couple more days, I'm planning her release
Saturday morning, as long as the weather stays as predicted.
