Thank you for posting all this advice. Glad I put this post on
an etiquette board.

I have asked my doctors before about exercise I should do, and
when I asked about a rowing machine they said that is something
I should not use.
Did your doctors say why you should not use a rowing machine? It
seems like a rowing machine would have far less impact on joints
than a treadmill, and possibly even less than an elliptical?
What about a stationary bike, maybe a recumbant bike with arms?
It depends on the why. I absolutely CANNOT use a rowing machine
as it will pop my shoulder out of socket from an old injury
(also have an issue with it making my tailbone burn like holy
hellfire from breaking it several years ago). I'm perfectly fine
on a treadmill or elliptical though.

Rowing machines are intense. They engage multiple muscles with
lots of pulling from the lats and shoulders (with some
involvement of the biceps), as well as pushing from the legs.
They'll get your HR pretty high but, generally, I don't think
they're the place for a new exerciser to start. They might be
low impact in terms of lower body joints, but they are not low
impact to shoulders and elbows.
I'm surprised that brother and sister-in-law found it to be a
wise gift. I think it's more likely that mother wore them down
until they allowed her to spend their money. I'd bet they know
that a. it's in poor taste to get someone an unsolicited
fitness/ weight loss gift (no matter their size!) and b. a
rowing machine is not the best option for a new exerciser. I
think they spent $300 to get Mother to shut up. (And based on
what you've said, Spuck, that seems like a bargain!)
I like giving them the option of returning it because the doctor
has advised against it's use. If they decline, sell it and buy
yourself something lovely.

My mom says she told them not to buy me the rowing machine. I
figure that they must have gotten an Amazon Prime deal because
it arrived a few days after Prime Day.

A C2 rowing machine costs upwards of $1,600 last I checked!
Different rowing machines are used differently and constructed
differently and cost less, I suppose. I remember when the YMCA
my family went to growing up had rowing machines with actual
oars on the sides and sliding seat. A totally different
experience than a C2 rower!
But I agree with the other posters that if you cannot use the
rowing machine they purchased for you, tell them and see whether
they can return it or resell it or give it to someone who can
use it.

They might be able to exchange it. Its all going to be an
awkward exchange for me because at the very least I am going to
have to say mom doesn't listen to me without bringing up all the
other stuff that is really just unnecessary information I wanted
to get off my chest somewhere.
They know your mother too, no?
Does mom listen to them any better than she listens to you?
You don't have to get into all that much; just say, "Mom keeps
forgetting that my doctors have told me not to use a rowing
machine. They'd prefer I use a treadmill, if I'm going to use
any machine. Could you return it and get your money back?"
(What about a pedaling exercise machine? You can sit in a
comfortable chair and pedal.)
(there are arms-only cardio workouts--maybe tapes for that?
Those might be much easier to get started with when you're extra
heavy. Or hand weights like the old Heavy Hands? I still
remember when Dick Gregory was helping an obese man build his
cardio fitness and burn calories by having him do "conducting
the orchestra" exercises with fun music)

"Bro, SIL, I wanted to thank you for your thoughtfulness on my
birthday, however, unfortunately it is something I cannot use. I
had talked to my doctors about exercise equipment and they said
specifically that rowing machines were not appropriate for me
because of my shoulder. In fact, I mentioned that to Mom... So
if she suggested this after I told her I couldn't use one I am
sorry on your behalf. If not, I am sure you love yours and
thought I might like one too. Mom often thinks she knows better
than me (or my doctors) about things that affect me, so I
encourage you next time to ask me directly. Something like a
treadmill would be appropriate for me. I know this is not an
inexpensive item so if you would like to return it for a refund
let me know and we can make arrangements for you to pick it up.
Once again, thank you for remembering me on my birthday."

How kind of you to want to give them a chance to get their money
back or exchange it for something you can actually use.
A gift, once given, belongs solely to the recipient and they can
do with as they please. Including throwing it away, giving it
away, selling it, returning it or exchanging it. It would be
nice if they could help you out with the information or direct
assistance.
But, seriously?!?! They gave you exercise equipment! Unless
you specifically expressed a desire for somerhing, that's a
huge insull'd say it's on them to appease you rather than the
other way around.

Meh... I talked to my mom this afternoon first, and we got in a
wee bit of a fight about the machine. I asked her about the
exchange about the rowing machine she wanted to borrow, and she
said they just suggested getting a new one then bought me a new
one before they told her not to. I can find that believable
because I have another brother that likes to push help on me,
along with my mom, without actually listening to me or asking me
how I want help. Its a family traits.
Now that I think about it my dads like that to.

Do you live with your mom? That kind of makes a little more
sense of how you ended up with a growing machine she wanted. I
think it would have been better to make it a gift to her rather
than you, though.
