Or the people that claimed that they were allowed the discount
or return by someone else recently that no one would be allowed
to give. We had a man claim every single holiday season that our
store had allowed him to buy bulk gift cards (like 100!) at a
steep discount. And the same staff had been in the store for
years and had never allowed it! :o

I've grown to really hate this Karen thing. I'm now seeing
people use it for anyone who disagree with them, and not just
for real entitlements. The irony is lost on them.
I hope it dies out soon. Karen is a lovely name and now it's
ruined.

Raintree, after working retail (and I know all those characters
you described!), I've come to the opinion that everyone should
be required to work retail themselves. I was never a "Please let
me speak to your manager" person before, but after working
retail I can predict I never will be. Unless it's a compliment!
Same here! Add in the people wanting discounts piled on top of
each other, or deep discounts for perceived-but-not-really
defects. And the magical "back"! Our back room was tiny, with no
stock. Nobody believed that. People were under the impression
that there was some massive secret warehouse behind those doors
instead of a little desk with paperwork and a microwave.
Customers could NOT believe that there's nothing to check in
back. So if asked, we'd politely agree to "check in back" and
disappear for a few minutes... maybe get a bathroom break... and
come back empty handed.
I really hated when Karens used my name from my name tag. I
think that was the signal to you that "I'll be able to name you
when I report this to your manager." Glad I had a great manager
who backed her staff.
"Massive secret warehouse" hahaha!! Well our "back" wasn't that
tiny, but if I knew for a fact that I had stocked the whole
shipment myself and that there was no overstock in the back,
going back there wasn't going to make it appear! Sometimes I'd
do to the back for a sec and hang out there just to appease them
as it was easier than arguing about it.
Hated the name tags - I don't know their name, why should they
know mine? Also the creepy old guys would use it to be creepy.

This was the reason I hated wearing a nametag when I worked in a
university. At award ceremonies we would have people come up,
obnoxiously look at my nametag and say "Well, Shadow, perhaps
you'd like to explain why my son has been queuing for his gown
for twenty minutes?"
It's obviously a power play, because if I had replied "Well,
Ricky, it's because he showed up twenty minutes late," there
would have been hell to pay.

Yes, it's the way they use a name with emphasis. With snark in
their voices. "Well, Raintree, I'd like a word with the
manager." Which was fine with me, the manager wasn't going to
get upset with me for enforcing store policy like no, I can't
refund that item you opened, used, and lost the receipt for. The
manager was more likely to enter the break room later and
commiserate about that miserable, unreasonable, demanding
customer.

However sometimes having done that job is what makes you know
that a) something can be done and b) is why you speak to the
manager
Not retail but several years ago I had an issue with child tax
credits where they hadn't paid and said it was going to be X
months before the payment came through (nothing I had done it
was an error on their end) - because I'd done that job before I
knew that because I had a child under a certain age they
couldn't not pay anything, and they could do an interim payment
- woman on the phone was insistent that they couldn't - pointed
out that I knew she could I'd done her job and you pressed X,
then Y and talked her through how to do it and said what the
exemption was under. In the end I said I wanted to speak to a
manager, she was quite rude, saying that I could but the manager
would back her up. Manager rang me back shortly afterwards
'I've authorised the transaction, it'll be there in the morning,
then the balance paid in X months'
I hated playing that card, but it can sometimes actually be the
case that the employee is wrong (more often it is the customer)

When I ask to speak to a manager, it’s never to punish the
clerk. It’s to make something happen that either the clerk
doesn’t understand or hasn’t got authority to do. I make a
point of saying, really nicely (it’s usually on the phone), “I
don’t want to ask you to do something you’re not supposed to
do. Could I possibly speak to a [not “your”] supervisor/manager,
who might be able to help me with this? You’ve been great,
though.”

Agree, I think of the saying, "Don't take a No from someone who
doesn't have the authority to say Yes."

The store I worked at had name tags for vendors, so while the
Coca Cola vendor was there stocking the soda, they wore the
store nametag with "Coke" on it.
One of my co-workers adopted the "Keebler" nametag. Even most
store employees thought that was his real name!
There was also one employee who had been there for years who
wore a nametag that said "New Employee" on it.

My husband and I recently started watching the show "Superstore"
and the main character wears a different name on her nametag
every day because she doesn't want customers to know her real
name. (not sure if that's through the whole series, we only
watched a couple of episodes)
