       Okay Karen
By: NFPwife Date: September 24, 2020, 1:11 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I've been turning this over in my mind for a while and the
thread "We just got here" combined with some Entitled Karen
stories on Reddit have me wondering where you all think the
"Karen" line is? Where do you crossover from asking for service
or an issue to be addressed into being a Karen.
I think Karen-phobia (what I'm going to call fear of being
labeled a Karen) is going to exacerbate the phenomenon of not
telling a business about something that went wrong, or could
have been better, and, instead, posting about it online. Which,
       IMO, isn't fair to businesses.
For me, the Karen line is crossed when you raise your voice.
Demean a worker. Request something unreasonable or unrealistic.
Butt into someone else's interaction or transaction to try to
shape or manage it. (Not an inclusive list, just a couple quick
       thoughts.)
(When Karens were just starting to be thing, I was considering
cutting my hair and talking to the stylist about it. (She'd
finished my cut and was spraying product, pulling a couple
little pieces around my face.) She said, "We could do an
inverted bob." I said, "If we do, I'm definitely going to need
to talk to your manager." Good thing I crack myself up because
she didn't get it, I tried to explain it, kept laughing at
       myself, and it fell flat.)

It falls flat with me too.* Why not just say, "Thanks for the
       suggestion but probably not."
       * I only vaguely, if that, get this "Karen" thing. I can't be
bothered to google it so I guess I don't.

Because an inverted bob is the haircut of choice for Karens. I
wouldn't have said, "Thanks for the suggestion but probably not"
because I would have considered an inverted bob-- if Karens
hadn't ruined it. Again, good thing I get my jokes.
(I did end up cutting my hair, but went with a short, layered
cut - all Reba, no Karen.)

I don't "do" Reddit so I've never heard of a "Karen". What is
       this about?

A "Karen" is a woman/mom who is entitled and make demands,
especially to cashiers who don't really have much power. For
example, the kind who loves the phrase "Manager! Now!" when the
cashier can't accept their expired coupon.
I think Kate Gosselin made the Karen haircut infamous. Look her
up if you're lucky enough not to know who she is.
There's even a Karen Halloween mask this year.

There's a meme in the link with the inverted bob.

here's one of the first sets of visuals describing this trope.

A "Karen" is a soccer-mom-type person who belittles the
Starbucks barista by being overly demanding and overreacting to
errors, and demanding to speak to the manager about the tiniest
perceived problem. She's officious and entitled, and has a
higher opinion of her importance and her rightness than is
       accurate.
It is someone who tries to borrow or weaponize the authority of
the manager over the retail store, the policies, or the workers
       themselves.
They of course come in all sorts of degrees of annoying-ness and
       venom.
There is often discussion about what a "male Karen" should be
called; my stance is "male Karen" is the proper term.

I feel bad for people whose name is Karen.
       I know three of them.
One is SO NOT a Karen.
The other is a different version of "not a Karen."
And the third can be a Karen sometimes, and has been in the
       past.
The name was chosen, I think, because it peaked in the 1960s, so
it denotes someone sort of older, and they're thought of as
fussy. Most Karens are actually a little bit younger.

As to where the line is: I think it's when you get superior and
bossy in your tone. When you get commanding and dismissive, and
demand things. Even if you don't yell.

       Male Karens are Kevins.
I know a Karen who is Karen epitomized.
