'Sweet dreams', thanks, I made a skirt
By: silversurfer Date: September 20, 2020, 7:37 pm

Hello - a small etiquette question for your all.
I belong to our local Buy Nothing group on Facebook, where
people request and give everything and anything. When you post
something, other's reply with 'please consider me' or 'I would
love to be considered' and the original poster choses whoever
they want, no justification expected or needed.
Anyway, someone posted a doona cover, and while I wasn't in need
of a doona cover, I did quite like the fabric. So after seeing
that no one had replied to the post in a couple of hours, I put
       my hand up.
I was successful and picked it up (all done contactless, so I
didn't see the gifter). After picking it I sent a message saying
I had collected it, and she wrote back saying 'sweet dreams'.
So - should I write back saying 'thanks, I made a skirt', and/or
send a picture? Or should I leave it?
       thoughts?

I would definitely leave it alone. It was given with the
thought that you would enjoy sleeping with it. I see no reason
to contradict that thought, especially since this is a virtual
       stranger.

^^^ I wish I could upvote that about a thousand times.
Clearly the giver hoped the recipient would be sleeping with it.
Please don't destroy her vision of how it would be used. It
would be unnecessarily cruel. You have thanked her. Now
       please leave it alone.

Agree with PPs. The poster thinks you're sleeping under it, no
need to tell her it turned into a skirt. Some people would find
that really cool and be impressed with your talent and
industriousness (me!) but others might think - "I wanted someone
who *needed* that to use it," and it could impact the poster
       choosing you in the future.

I agree with everybody. If you want to respond, just say thanks
again. Don't tell her you made a skirt.

If you want to thank them, you could say "Thank you." then add
something about the print/fabric being beautiful.

I'm going against the prevailing opinion. I would love to hear
you turned it into a skirt. If I'm giving something away, I
don't care how the recipient plans to enjoy it. I'm just happy
they found a useful purpose. And I'd admire your skill and
       creativity.
The only caveat to this would be say you take someone's free
wedding dress and turn it into a halloween costume. Then I
       probably wouldn't share that.

I’m with leave it alone. Or “Thanks. I’m enjoying it.”

I would agree, if the gifter hadn't said, 'Sweet dreams'. With
that having been said, I would leave it alone or just reply
       'Thanks'.

Normally I'd agree wholeheartedly with you. But the person made
very clear in her response that she hoped the LW would be
sleeping with it. She said so. Why shatter her feelings of joy
and happiness at the idea of someone cuddling with her cover?
It just seems kind of mean.
