I don't know if this is just me, or if I am a mean and judgy
person. But what is with people constantly e-begging and asking
for people to fund them? In a lot of facebook groups I know, it
seems that people drop their Venmo or Paypal details and ask
others to buy them treats or pay their bills. Am I just old and
grouchy, is this really socially acceptable these days?

A lot of that's spam, too. I report it unless I know it's a real
person asking. But, I'll usually just ignore them unless I 100%
KNOW it's a legit situation. I've been burned once by relatives
(posted that on another thread) and by people who were supposed
to be friends...so I'm very stingy in these situations now.

We just saw a young person who used car chalk to write, on his
rear windshield, that he just graduated, didn't have a job yet,
and had student loans. Then, added his cashapp for people to buy
him a drink.

I wonder what his reaction would be if he was offered a job
because of that sign on his car. I wonder if it would have to be
the job he wanted or if he would settle for some unglamorous
"entry level" job.

Add me to the mean and grouchy group. This kind of begging is
all kinds of wrong.
Now excuse me while I go yell at those kids to get off my lawn.

I've seen similar. I'd be smacking my kid upside the head if he
did that.

My husband had a similar comment - I'd seen the cashapp written
on the side window and at the top edge of the rearview mirror so
I knew where it was headed... but, I read it to DH and when it
ended with "buy me a drink," DH said, "Well that took a turn, I
thought he was going to say, if you're hiring HMU with an
email."

One of my grandkids (high school age) has an online fundraiser
for his sports team. What ever happened to bake sales, car
washes, etc? Just straight up "give me money." (I didn't).

Well hang a "hi, my name is grouchy" tag on me, too.
I honestly appreciate a Caring Bridge site and Go Fund Me
campaigns for people facing devastating medical hardships. I
want to halp out and this makes it easy. Not so much if their
kid just broke their arm.
I'll buy the cookie dough and probably add a donation on top if
your kid is raising money for their sportsball team or scout
camp. I don't like the straight-up request for money with no
attempt to earn it on their part.
I have no interest in "I'm 20 and feel like I need a break"
please for $3000 for an amazing vacation. Nope. You work to earn
that.
I also don't like Go Fund Me campaigns for mission trips to
vacation-type spots. I understand taking a day to see the
sights, but that should be a very small part of your trip. I
want my money to help build schools, not give you a week at the
beach. I was treasurer at 2 different churches over the years
and I had to deliver news to teenagers many times that
fundraising campaigns would support actual work, but the vacay
cost is on them. They always think they can sneak that by me.
😀

A friend's son's baseball team is doing yard work and power
washing (supervised by their coaches) for a fundraiser. We don't
live close enough to take advantage, but I absolutely would if I
could.

Somewhat related: if you go on Facebook and beg your friends to
vote for your kid in some contest, I'm going over to the link
you provide, perusing all the entries, and voting for the
entrant who deserves to win based on their work. Your kid
entered a competition of skill, not a parental popularity
contest.
