       Tipping delivery persons?
By: peony Date: July 28, 2020, 11:15 am

I just realized that I have never tipped a delivery person. I
tip the mailman at Christmas (more if I've ordered a lot of
packages through the mail that year), but I never thought that
the person who delivers a sofa or refrigerator might welcome a
tip. What should I do? Do you tip your delivery persons? How
       much?

To my knowledge, it isn't customary to tip in my area. What is
customary is to offer a cold beverage in the summer, a warm
beverage in the winter and order pizza if they are there for a
period of time and over a meal time. I hired movers the last
time I moved and it took longer than either of us were
anticipating, which left them unloading over the lunch hour so I
ran out and grabbed pizza and cold drinks.
I'm sure any delivery person would welcome a tip but I do know
they appreciate free food and drink, too! ;D
ETA: For me, it also depends on whether or not delivery is a
separate charge. If it is a separate charge, I don't think I'd
tip - I'm paying for that service. But if delivery is included,
I'd be more likely to offer a small tip. Maybe $5 per person.

I'm with STiG, if I'm paying for delivery, I'm unlikely to tip,
but will offer a drink or snack. If delivery was included, we
tip $5, especially if the delivery was exceptional in anyway -
for instance they were on time/ arrived in the beginning of the
time slot, it's pouring rain, they were particularly helpful.
I should add that I feel tipping culture has gotten out of
control, so I'm really trying to pull back on tipping especially
if I've paid for delivery. (We had a freezer delivered and paid
for delivery and removal of the old so we didn't tip.)

I was a motel maid in college, and I still remember a $5 tip I
got. So I became an ardent tipper.
I tip delivery people. I'll tip them extremely generously if
they do things not included, like assembly, or pushing the giant
box into my living room (when it was to be left outside on the
porch during the pandemic). Once I asked for a TV to be mounted
on the wall and it should have been a two-person job due to the
size of the TV (which I had underestimated by just a small
amount when arranging for the service). My son helped lift the
TV into place and I paid the extra that I would have for the two
person install to the technician who installed it.
Also, I'm more likely to tip an employee of a business than an
       owner.

I try to remember to have some cash on hand for large
       deliveries.

I'm a delivery person tipper. A BIG tipper. The delivery
people don't get one cent of that delivery fee, and often a tip
is the only thing keeping them from starvation that
day/week/year. You never know. They get paid crap, and have
to put up with rude customers, some of them who find anything
and everything to complain about so they get refunded anyway.
It's a horrible job, and dangerous. Delivery people have been
attacked and murdered for the money they carry.
I grew up in deep country, where nobody delivered, so when I
moved into my first apartment (actually later, when I could
actually afford delivered food), I discovered that people
actually bring food To My Door!! Woohoo! It was the thrill of
my lifetime. So I tip very generously, and every time. I
usually try to tip in cash, but in these days, cash is risky, so
I put it all on the card.
My tips get bigger as the weather gets worse. I actually
ordered delivery food during Snowmagedden, and I told the
delivery guy that there was no parking, so just call me when he
got to the parking lot and I'll come down and take it from him.
He actually found a spot and delivered to my door! I think I
tipped him 50% for that. SO worth it. I've ordered delivery
during horrible rain storms (we get some real monsoons down here
in the DC area), and I tip big then. I find that my tipping
practices gets me some seriously awesome service.
Someone on another list mentioned that he could picture all of
my delivery people showing up bleeding and bruised, from the
fights in the store on who gets to deliver to me. LOL
For the record, your mileage may vary. I've never lived
anywhere near a high-end location, just middle-class to poor.
       So, often dangerous areas.

I would love to win the lottery so I could tip huge on services.
Because that's the easiest way to make someone's day. It
doesn't have to be a grand 'bought the lady behind the counter
at McDonald's a car' gesture. $50-$100 can be enough to make a
difference for someone. I love the song 'Chain of Love' with
the story of the lady with a flat, the guy who stops to help,
won't take any money and she stops to buy some lunch, pays with
a $100 bill and leaves and the waitress turns out to be the
       guy's wife.

I remember the old forum advising me (or maybe someone else and
I just picked up on it) that typically, at least in the US,
tipping would be appropriate. I've really only had two big
deliveries and a house move. I definitely tipped the movers,
although I forget the amount. Maybe $10 a piece (three guys)? It
took a half day and they were excellent. Also, this was their
job, so I would not have seen it as appropriate to fed them, but
I did provide them with bottled water (which seemed
       appreciated.)
I also had a couch delivered; no removal of an old one. This was
a really simple delivery. Then I had a mattress delivered and
removed. This one involved a bit more work with having to go
up/down a flight of curved stairs. Maybe $5 for each person?
(Again, I can't remember what amount I decided on.) These
deliveries were under an hour each (the couch was probably less
than 10 minutes), so I didn't offer water.

I don't believe that it is customary where I live, but I do it
anyway. I tip $10 per person for the delivery of a large item,
such as sofa. If they do something they aren't required to do,
such as haul the old sofa to the curb, I give extra for that,
maybe $5. When I moved to a new home, I tipped more, but can't
remember how much. Also, for the all day moving job I had food
and beverages, but they went somewhere for lunch, so didn't eat
       much of the food.
