Adding a new member to the family

DD16 wants a dog. She's wanted one for years. We have 3 older
cats. One is pretty chill and will likely get along with a dog.
One is aloof and will avoid and ignore a dog. One is iffy, and
I'm not sure how he will react to a dog. My guess is hide then
grudgingly accept it. I'm thinking that a puppy would be the
best fit. Does anyone have any experience will introducing a dog
       into a family of cats?

If your daughter goes off to college, you will be taking care of
this dog. Maybe for the rest of its life. Are you prepared for
       that?
Have you had a dog before? If not, maybe a puppy won't be the
       best idea.

I went to the animal shelter today. I wanted to go alone to get
some information about animals. They too suggested that a puppy
might not be a great idea. While a puppy might see the cats as
dominant, he'd likely be jumping all over them. I looked at a
5ish year old Min-Pin mixed breed. He is adorable. He's calm and
gentle. He seems to have no problem with other animals.
I'm planning to take my time with this. A dog might not be a
good fit for our family. We still have a lot to think over. I'm
going to get DD to sit down with me and tell me exactly what her
expectations. Who will walk the dog? Who will feed the dog? If
she can't answer these questions, then she isn't ready for a
       dog.

Maybe you might want to consider seeing if your DD would be
willing to volunteer with the shelter. It would not only help
them but it could give you an idea of how long she'd be willing
to commit to a dog's care needs. If she gets tired of the care
involved after a couple of weeks or months that could be
valuable information about how much responsibility would fall to
you after her initial excitement wears off.

Another responsibility is cleaning up the dog poop. It really
needs to be picked up daily, unless you want the stench during
       the summer months.

I think this is where Amara's suggestion is genius; I'm guessing
that poop-picker-upper will be one of the new-volunteer jobs at
most shelters? It would certainly give a more balanced view
       than "play with this puppy".
Having lived next door to never-picker-uppers, with a tiny
garden [think 15' x 15'], the smell can be horrendous and make a
person living in the next house along yearn for cold, wet,
       winter to start.

After a lot of real talk, we decided that a dog was not a good
fit for our family. I told DH that I'd never feel really
comfortable about DD walking a dog in our neighborhood in the
dark. That means I'd probably have to do any late evening or
       early morning walk & scoops.
Once we'd decided on no new pets, a white & black kitten decided
that we should have another cat. His name is Bean, and he is
adorable. I'll be posting pics soon.

Cats choose who they will. Obviously Cat Central decided you
       needed Bean. ;D
