Re: You want the money? Fill out the forms!

My thought is that, having fully checked out the legal situation
in your state and your responsibilities therein, you should send
them a sign-off message: 'I have done all I can do to settle
Dad's finances and help you get your inheritances, so I'm bowing
out. You all have the necessary paperwork: either you complete
it and send it in to the X Corporation, or at some point - I
don't know how long - the money will be turned over to the
state treasury as unclaimed funds. If you allow that to happen,
I have no idea whether or how you can claim it back from the
state. It's entirely up to each of you now.' You might want to
copy their parents and any other legatees in to that message, so
everybody knows you've dumped the responsibility firmly in their
laps.
There's no guarantee, whatever you say or do, that they won't
come whining to you much later saying 'Oh, we didn't know...' or
'You were supposed to be responsible!'; but that makes it all
the more important that you know and can prove that you had done
all you could and had clearly told them so.
