Well, I put in some time at the sewing machine tonight and think
I will have 4 done by tomorrow morning. I don't know why they
seem so hard to make, because they really aren't difficult, I
think I'm just feeling stressed. I've never made something that
people are using to help keep alive.
I'm not doing the pleated ones, but the ones that can go over
the ones at the hospital.

Gmatoy - I think there's something to that. I got a bunch of
rectangles cut last Saturday and made one on Sunday. I haven't
been able to bring myself to do anymore in the evenings when I
get home. I've had a few people ask for them, so tomorrow I will
make myself sit down and crank them out.

VorGuy has "taken orders" from his parents & the sibling who
lives with them, I have "orders" from DD & her family, and of
course a few for our own household.
I am moderating another forum (nameless here to avoid my name
getting searchable instead of just my self-chosen nickname) and
the whole subject of face masks blew up into a *Perfect Storm*
level of crazy. To the point that the words "f*ce m*sk" may
cause me to experience varying levels of anxiety & dread when
they appear on my computer screen.
The forum got switched to 100% moderation due to an inability to
"follow the rules" - heck, I'm not sure that all the new members
are reading the rules before they make their first posts...
But I need to cut out and sew over four dozen masks for ten
people and not everyone knows "their size" - so a second round
orders may very well come in...I'm glad that my mother is
healthy enough to sew her own and that I gave a spare sewing
machine to an aunt - everyone else on that side of the family is
contacting HER!

I've been making them for several weeks, following the pattern
provided by the local medical center, although I have given all
mine to the social service agency where I volunteer, and a few
to friends/neighbors.

Well, I wish I had only cut out a few before sewing some up. I
think the pattern I used is too small for some people. The next
size up works much better, in the pattern I'm using. So the man
size is better for most of my family than the woman/teen one. I
may offer the others to the family with children, as they could
probably use them. I completed 6 yesterday and 4 so far today.
I'm going to try to do 3 more tonight and then finish the last 5
tomorrow.
I realized today that my knee doesn't like the pedal to my
sewing machine at all. So pain is a part of the whole sewing
experience.

Are you able to switch the pedal to the other foot? It might
take a bit to get used to but you'll avoid the knee pain on the
bad side.
I switch my mouse over to the left when my right wrist acts up.
I'm a little slower but it gets the job done.

I have some of all four sizes cut out, on the pattern that I'm
using. One grandchild is four - he may need the smallest size.
If he doesn't, there is a four year old cousin who can probably
wear them. The nine-year-old is at the 99% of growth - he may
need the woman/teen size, even if it's too small for his mother.
I know that I like the way the man's size fits better...but
VorSon & SIL both have beards...this might project might involve
some tinkering with the pattern using VorSon to get it adjusted
for a beard...

Interesting that some of you are doing different sizes. The
group that is doing the ones I am doing really only has two
sizes. The regular size, which should fit most adults, and a
larger one. They aren't providing them for children, just for
front-line folks. That includes any medical people that aren't
under the provincial health care services, food and grocery
workers, delivery people, and so on. We have done about 1200 so
far, with requests for another 4000 so far. I will have done 40
by the end of day tomorrow!
They apparently did a lot of research into what should be used,
and the best recommendation from the medical people is 100% good
quality cotton (so somewhat higher thread count.) There's a lot
of talk about people using bandanas, but the thread count in
them is not very high. Crocheted or knitted would be not good.
They would be too warm* for one, and would capture too much
moisture from your breath, and moisture is not good in masks. I
am trying to remember what they said about that - something to
do with making it worse for catching a virus. Plus if you have
to line it (and put a filter in), then you might just as well
skip the crochet part and save yourself some work and time.
(*The medical people said that the cloth masks were a lot warmer
than what they were used to with the surgical type masks.)
The patterns they are having us use have the ties go through a
casing on the sides, rather than sewing the ends of the tie (or
elastic) to the mask. Their research has found that whether you
use elastic or ties, this works best as it makes it conform to
the face better, for everyone including men with beards. So
VorFemme, you might want to try that.
Here's a link to the video and tutorial that was recommended, if
you're interested:

They do get easier once you have done a few, and figure out how
best to pleat them. I made a paper template that seems to be
working well!
And for filters, I did read in a couple of places recently that
those blue shop towels are recommended. They are non-woven
material, and you can cut lots of filters from the roll as they
have to be disposed of after every single use.
Also they said that most of the people who have used them prefer
ties as opposed to elastics, as the elastic can hurt the ears
after a while. But you can make "ear savers" - a strip of ribbon
with a button sewn on each end that the elastic is attached to
behind your head, instead of your ears!

The masks I'm making are being given to back line workers (as
opposed to front line workers) and seniors. The woman
organizing the distribution seems too laid back to me and has
raised questions in my mind.
We're making the masks with the pleats, no pocket, plus ties and
the understanding they are better than nothing.
I'm using cotton/poly fabric. I'm using Pellon between the
layers. I'm thinking of cutting up an old cotton/poly bed sheet
to use as an extra layer between the cotton layers.
Do YOU see any problems here?

The instructions I follow call for 100% cotton.

I had wondered whether a casing was better than sewing the tie
on.
The pleats would be anchored just the same, but you wouldn't
have to spend so much time getting the tie in just the right
spot.
I would think the 100% cotton would matter, as would the
dense-ness of the weave.
