       Masks
By: Pattycake Date: April 8, 2020, 7:40 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I joined a Facebook group for the city near me for making masks.
I made my first five today - here's the first one:
       [attachimg=1]
There are no ties because they have a bunch of people making
ties from donated t-shirts. It turned out pretty well, but the
next four were better as I worked out better how to get the
pleats more even and straight. And the right way - the pleats
are supposed to go down, not up! (There's a reason, but I forget
what it is.) Here's the link to the tutorial I used. It's pretty
straightforward for the most part, but if you have any
       questions, feel free to ask!

Here's the video to go with the above tutorial:

Here's another link to a thingy you can make if you use the
elastic instead of the ties, to save your ears from irritation.

I have seen some homemade masks and think they are cute. I
haven’t sewn in about 4 years, but I am thinking I might try. To
do this. I have a lot of pillowcases and t-shirts. Wish me luck.

The pleats on the ones we bought when I had breast cancer were
one way on the front and the other way on the back. And can't
you just flip that one around and have the pleats going the
       correct way?

Depends if she’s already sewn a piece of metal in there.

I forget the reason that the pleats are supposed to go down, but
you're right, they do go down on the other side, and it doesn't
really make a lot of sense to me as the pleats actually unfold
when you put them on. They are what allow it to go under your
chin. And yes, the nose wire is put in place before the pleats
are done. But, if it is essential that they go the other way,
the person can always wear it with the other side out - the
only thing that will happen then is that the slit for the filter
will be on the outside, and that may not be optimal. On the
other hand, there are masks with the filter slot on the very
top, and they don't have a flap to cover that opening, so maybe
that wouldn't matter then. I don't know... I just try to follow
directions! (and, apparently, not too successfully at times!)

I believe that the pleats are to go down on the outside of the
mask so that the droplets don't fall into the pleat.

that "not making a pleat to catch droplets" but also I think
they unfold more easily and mold to your chin more easily when
they point down on the outside.
I'd think you'd want them to be in nested pleats before you sew
       the sides on.

I have a sewing machine but I don't sew. I may have to try to
figure it out, if I have time after working on all my seedlings
       and getting ready for planting!

Well, I put in some time at the sewing machine tonight and think
I will have 4 done by tomorrow morning. I don't know why they
seem so hard to make, because they really aren't difficult, I
think I'm just feeling stressed. I've never made something that
people are using to help keep alive.
I'm not doing the pleated ones, but the ones that can go over
       the ones at the hospital.

I have just seen a post on Facebook with a crocheted outer mask
with a lining and filter pocket. I can probably managed that!
I'll probably have to use pillowcases for the lining.
