I have a boarder of garter stich....about a finger length wide
Niece had a baby boy, her DH likes his college colors. So
the plan (now - after everyone's input) is to use 2 sport
strands of blue and one "feels like butta" strand in white for
the boarder; and drop one stand of blue for the body.
Hope I my description was clear (I have dropped and picked up a
color before)

Keep in mind you're going to have to have a skein or ball of the
extra blue (for the border) at each end of the project.
With 2 blue and a white, knit in garter stitch for the border
(say 10 stitches.)
Drop 1 blue strand and knot stockinette stitch for the body.
Pick up another blue and knit another 10 stitches in garter
stitch.

To anyone who can knit with sport yarn..... I'm in awe.
I'm revised my plans (yet again) and am not going to bother
dropping and picking up.... Thank goodness this is a small car
seat blanket (25"). I'll make a "normal" blanket for baby boy
after this is done.

I'm almost done, but discovered that (as I changed my "pattern")
I don't have enough yarn to finish it. The blue yarn is on back
order & I'm waiting to find out if they will be getting more.
In the meantime I'm going to attempt basket weave (thanks so
much for the suggestion).
Do you normally put a boarder of garter stich on a basket weave
baby blanket?

Basketweave is fun. I did an afghan using that stitch. If I
could go back in time, I would do garter stitch as the edging.
It keeps the edges from curling.

I've learned the same thing.
