Grocery Shopping Etiquette - Pandemic Style
By: DaDancingPsych Date: March 29, 2020, 7:57 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Hi Everyone! I feel like etiquette (in the name of health and
safety) has changed over the past few weeks. I see all kinds of
new social rules developing in the grocery stores; it is super
interesting. I thought we could open a discussion of what these
       new rules are.
I'll start with a question. My grocery store has one of those
rotating plastic bag holders. The cashier bags the groceries,
spins the holder, and the shopping can retrieve the goods.
Previously, I always opened the next plastic bag to help her/him
work faster. (The plastic bags like to stick together and
sometimes it can be time consuming for them to open them.)
Should I stop doing this? Part of me says yes, the less hands
touching things the better for the cashier. The other part says
no, this means they don't have to touch the bag and can just
place the item in and move on.
       What do you see?

Both my local grocery stores have gone back to free plastic
bags. They don't want either the bagger or you to use your bags.
       Neither use those rotating holders.
Under current conditions in which we have to keep our distance,
forego opening the bag. You could even mention "I feel like I'm
being rude by not opening the new bag for you, but considering
the times, I figured it's best not to!?

My daughter is doing my grocery shopping for me so it will be
interesting to see what is happening in the grocery stores in
these new times. I hope everyone will contribute to this topic.

It's a surreal experience. But I'm glad that your daughter is
       able to help you out!!!

I think your instincts are right; limit the number of hands
       touching the bags.
One thing I've also heard mentioned is to buy the front item,
instead of digging behind for a "better" one. The fewer items
handled, the fewer points of contact for spreading germs.
Also, if you are using a delivery service, tip in the app, or
sanitize bills before handing over to your delivery person.
And for the love of Pete, do not leave your cart unattended in
the middle of an aisle where everyone has to touch it to get by!

Stores here (MB, Canada) have started putting tape lines on the
floor at 2m intervals, to remind people how far apart we should
be. So far people are following nicely.
The stores near me also have staff on the floor, about one for
every two aisles, sort of monitoring how close people are, and
occasionally asking people to wait before entering an aisle.
I've started putting on nitrile gloves when I enter the store
(they don't affect touch-screens for self-check), and then
removing them as soon as I'm out.
As of yesterday, stores are limiting the number of patrons
inside at a time, so there are lines outside the stores, also
with staff ensuring proper distance is maintained.
Aside from keeping distance, the new etiquette seems to have
people being more considerate of others, which is a nice side
effect. People are more aware of who is around them, so there is
a much more calm vibe (ironic!).

I have been watching the space between costumers at the
registers increase. There are not printed lines at my store, but
everyone appeared to be exactly 6 feet apart. I'm blown away how
quickly we learned this space bubble.

Trader Joe's is back to free paper bags if you want them to pack
them, but if you bring your own (fabric) bags you have to pack
those yourself. They will not touch them. I do because I prefer
to re-use my bags. I know they are clean because I wash them
       once a week.

I'm sorry to say that at my store, there have been some rough
spots. A fight in the parking lot. A kerfluffle in an aisle
over beans, of all things. Tempers are short: some are grousing
over rationed things, like paper towels, eggs, and milk. Some
are mad because the rewards card system was suspended, rendering
the card useless. Grousing about prices, which on some things
has jumped, and we don't have a circular ad for the foreseeable
future. I think it's fear talking.
As far as the bags go, I didn't think of that! I have many
customers who bring their own, but they tend to bag their own as
well (there's no requirement that they do). I can't wear latex
gloves, and they don't provide nitrile gloves for those of us
with an allergy. I haven't even noticed the six foot distance
at all-it feels more crowded than ever :(. On the other hand,
many are good sports and thank us for being there, and wish us
       and our families well.

I prefer the self checkout but either way, I notice a lot of
stores wipe down the area after every customer. Employees are
wearing gloves too. I think it's ok to open bags as long as you
only touch one at a time.
